The Art of Managing Stakeholders — Balancing Expectations - Part 4
One of the unexpected challenges I faced in L&D was managing stakeholder expectations. There were business leaders who wanted immediate results, senior trainers who had strong opinions, and vendors who had their way of doing things. Balancing all these expectations felt like juggling without a safety net.
There were days when senior trainers provided feedback that felt more like criticism. “You’re missing the depth,” they would say, or “This isn't how we used to do it.” My instinct was to defend my efforts, but I soon realized that defending wasn’t helping me learn. I began to listen not just to respond but to understand.
Managing vendor partnerships added another layer of complexity. Evaluating multiple vendors, negotiating terms, managing payments, and handling delays required diplomacy. There were times when payments got delayed, and vendors grew frustrated. Addressing their concerns while maintaining professional boundaries wasn't easy.
I also encountered biases during trainer evaluations, senior trainers favoring certain approaches or resisting feedback. It took careful communication to ensure that feedback was fair and focused on growth rather than personal preferences.
Through these experiences, I learned that L&D isn't just about delivering content; it's about building trust, maintaining relationships, and being open to difficult conversations. Stay tuned for more tips at Part 5.
