The Art of Observation: Unlocking Deeper Understanding in the Workplace

As leaders, it is crucial to develop the ability to keenly observe the people we work with—their behaviors, motivations, and aspirations. By delving into the intricacies of how and why individuals work, we can foster stronger connections, drive engagement, and ultimately lead our teams to greatness. Let's explore three fundamental aspects that leaders must observe: Reason for Work, Cause for work, and the Relationship with work.

"Leadership is about understanding the people you lead, empowering them to succeed, and fostering an environment where their motivations align with the goals of the organization." - Charanjit Lehal

  1. Reason for Work: Unveiling Immediate Motivations Every individual has a unique reason to work. It may stem from the need to earn a living, but it goes beyond that. Some are driven by a thirst for continuous learning and personal growth. By recognizing and acknowledging these immediate motivations, leaders can tap into what energizes and inspires their team members. When we understand the "why" behind their work, we can better align their individual goals with the broader objectives of the organization.
  2. Cause for Work: Unleashing Long-Term Aspirations Truly understanding people means going beyond surface-level motivations. As leaders, we must strive to know our team members deeply. Many individuals have long-term aspirations that extend beyond personal gain. They may seek to provide a better future for themselves and their families, strive to achieve financial independence, or dream of creating something remarkable of their own. Some are motivated by a genuine desire to make a positive impact on their communities or society at large. By supporting these causes, leaders empower their team members to find purpose and fulfilment in their work.

  1. Relationship with Work: Cultivating Happiness and Engagement Leaders must be attuned to the relationship their team members have with their work. Are they genuinely happy and engaged, or do they encounter obstacles and disengagement? By closely observing this dynamic, leaders can identify areas for improvement and create an environment that fosters satisfaction and productivity. When individuals feel supported and fulfilled in their work, they become more invested in their roles and contribute their best efforts to the team.

By embracing the power of understanding, leaders can forge stronger relationships, inspire their teams, and create an environment where personal and professional growth flourish. By recognizing the Reason for Work, Cause for work, and the Relationship with work, a leader can foster a culture of empathy, collaboration, and shared success.

I came into my last work on the back of woundings. Fresh from Divorce Traumas of earthquakes 6.4 And exhausted I expected a new start New town New friendships I've always helped as part of childhood woundings to just be noticed. I wanted the same To be noticed But got hurt even more. I also wanted to prove I could make a difference to a business. I knew my abilities. I didn't know about bias And suppression. In the end My Reward was held back Just for me as a Coping Method, a self validation. When you're so low from energy vampires it's hard acknowledging that you are an ok person.
