A study by the International Labour Organization (ILO) found that GenAI is more likely to complement jobs by automating specific tasks rather than taking over entire roles. This augmentation approach allows workers to focus on higher-value activities that require uniquely human skills such as creativity, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence.

According to a McKinsey report, GenAI could automate 60% to 70% of employee workloads. However, this automation is more likely to lead to job transformation rather than wholesale replacement. The ILO study suggests that the effects of GenAI will vary across countries and demographics. In high-income countries, about 5.5% of total employment is potentially exposed to automation effects, while in low-income countries, this figure is only 0.4%.Interestingly, the potential for augmentation is nearly equal across countries, indicating that with appropriate policies, developing nations could also benefit significantly from this technological shift
