A new smartphone app, the Diabetes Health Check, is set to revolutionize type 2 diabetes diagnosis by cutting the wait time from months to just minutes using a simple finger-prick test. This groundbreaking technology, created by PocDoc, combines a traditional blood test with a mobile app to provide immediate HbA1c results, which could help identify undiagnosed patients and potentially save the NHS billions. Currently being piloted in parts of the UK, the app aims to make early detection and prevention more accessible, moving testing from clinics to community and home settings.

New research published in Scientific Reports shows that individuals with asthma living in socioeconomically disadvantaged neighborhoods face a significantly higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The study found a clear link between neighborhood deprivation and diabetes risk for both men and women with asthma. “The results of this study provide valuable insights for policymakers, highlighting the need to consider neighborhood deprivation when allocating resources in primary healthcare settings. They also offer guidance for optimizing clinical care strategies for patients in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities,” shared the study authors.

Company Updates
GMP Certification Received
In August, Orange Biomed received Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) certification for in vitro diagnostic medical devices from Korea’s Ministry of Food and Drug Safety.
This certification proves we can manufacture to global standards and deliver a product people can trust, bringing us closer to our vision of making daily diabetes management more accessible.
With this certification, we now have the official approval to scale production of our OBM rapid A1c device, which utilizes the world's first single-cell microfluidic analysis technology, enabling faster and more accurate testing compared to conventional A1C meters.

Next-generation Diabetes Monitoring: Orange Biomed’s Microfluidic Breakthrough
In August, Orange Biomed Co-Founder Unghyeon Ko spoke with Christina Balsano Wichmann from Medical Laboratory Observer Online to discuss how OBM rapid A1c’s accuracy, inclusivity, and accessibility set it apart from traditional A1C tests. “Our technology is different. Because we do not depend on protein quantification method, but instead directly analyze the physical properties of red blood cells, the limitations of miniaturization do not apply in the same way. That’s why even in a portable, reusable form, our test can potentially achieve laboratory-level precision,” shared Dr. Ko.
Orange Biomed was named by Fortune Korea as one of the "Top 40 Promising Healthcare Innovators for the US Market."
