The Automation of Everything: Redefining the Nature of Human Work
(This is Part 30 of a series, exploring the Macro View of the Future of Work)
In part 4, we built the playbooks for navigating our careers. Now, in Part 5, we zoom out to the massive global forces that are reshaping the entire playing field. We begin with the most powerful force of all: the automation of everything.
In the AI Productivity Paradox, we explored how AI acts as an augment, freeing us from rote tasks. But what is the long-term societal consequence of this? If machines and algorithms become capable of handling all predictable work—from financial analysis and medical diagnostics to driving trucks and writing code—what is left for us?
This question sparks a deep, existential fear. But this fear is based on a misunderstanding of human value. The automation of everything doesn't make us obsolete. It is not an extinction event for human work; it is an extinction event for predictable, repetitive, machine-like work.
This great automation liberates us to finally, and fully, do the work we were uniquely evolved to do.
The Superpower AI Cant Touch: Imagined Realities
In his book Sapiens, historian Yuval Noah Harari argues that Homo sapiens conquered the world not because we were stronger or faster, but because we are the only animal that can cooperate flexibly in large numbers. We do this through our unique ability to create and believe in "fictions" or "imagined realities."
A corporation is an imagined reality. Money is an imagined reality. Nations, laws, and human rights are imagined realities. A startup's mission statement is an imagined reality. AI is incredibly powerful at optimizing within an existing imagined reality—it can find the most efficient shipping route, trade stocks within a market, or find the bug in a piece of code.
But it cannot invent one. It cannot dream.
As AI takes over the "how" of optimization, the entire economic value of human work shifts to the "why" of imagination. Our value is no longer in executing the plan; it's in creating the plan in the first place. This work will be concentrated in three uniquely human domains.
The Three Pillars of Future Human Value
These are not "soft skills." These are the new, hard-edged economic drivers of the 21st century.
1. Inventing the Fiction: High-Level Strategy amp; Vision
This is the act of creating a new imagined reality from scratch. It is the human ability to look at a complex, ambiguous future and articulate a compelling, entirely new vision.
This is the "delusional confidence" that leaders have—the courage to pursue a role or an idea that seems out of reach. It is the domain of the entrepreneur who sees a gap in the market that no one else does. It is the work of The Creative Imperative, of asking "What if?" and "Why not?" AI can analyze an existing market to death; it cannot imagine the market that doesn't exist yet. This is the work of dreaming, and it is priceless.
2. Designing the Fiction: Creative Problem-Solving
An imagined reality, like "a nation," is useless without the "fictions" that give it form, like a constitution, laws, and a flag. It's the same in business. A vision for a new product is just a dream until it's given form through a business model, a brand identity, a user-experience design, and a marketing strategy.
This is the domain of creative problem-solving. It's the work of synthesizing disparate ideas, of translating a high-level "why" into a tangible "what." AI can generate a thousand variations, but it is the human with a disciplined eye who must provide the taste, the judgment, and the context to find the one variation that resonates.
3. Spreading the Fiction: Deep Interpersonal Connection
This is the most critical and most human pillar. An imagined reality—a company's mission, a nation's values, a new currency—has zero power unless a large number of people collectively believe in it.
This is the work of trust. It is the work of leadership, culture-building, and deep human connection.
It is the Ambitious Appreciation that a leader uses to inspire a team to believe in a mission.
It is the Political Virtuosity that builds a coalition of stakeholders to believe in a new direction.
It is the empathy of a caregiver, the inspiration of a great teacher, and the trust-building of a salesperson that convinces a customer to believe in a product.
AI can simulate communication, but it cannot build human trust. This domain is, and will remain, our exclusive territory.
The Macro Value Paradox: The Great Revaluation
This brings us to the societal-level fulfillment of the Value Paradox.
For the last century, we have created value by being more like machines: efficient, precise, and predictable. As machines become perfect at these tasks, the economic value of that kind of human work plummets to zero.
In response, the value of our most scarce, non-scalable, and inefficient-looking human traits explodes. We are witnessing a "Great Revaluation":
What was "hard" (analysis, prediction, technical execution) is becoming a "soft," commoditized utility, like electricity—powerful, but cheap and abundant.
What was "soft" (connection, trust, creativity, strategic judgment) is becoming the new "hard skill." It is the rare, high-value component that actually drives success.
Conclusion: The End of Drudgery, The Dawn of Humanity
The automation of everything is not a threat to human work; it is the final liberation from drudgery. It is a societal-level Cognitive Revolution, a moment that is forcing us to move the goalposts for our own ambition.
We are being pushed out of the "predictable" world of the Agricultural Revolution—the world of repeatable tasks and farming—and forced, for the first time in 12,000 years, to fully re-embrace the core cognitive skill that made us human in the first place: the ability to imagine new worlds, and to lead others in building them.

1dIn my view …It ultimately comes down to trust. You can have the most superior vision and creativity (and we’ve seen plenty of that even before AI). But as AI evolves, the lines between originality and augmentation will blur faster than we expect. The real differentiator won’t just be intelligence or ideas—it will be the trust people place in the creator and their intent.
