BA190 Edge I/O Module Enable Smart HVAC Control

BA190 Edge I/O Module Enable Smart HVAC Control

In modern commercial buildings, HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems account for over 40% of total energy consumption. To achieve precise control and energy savings, a large commercial complex implemented the BLIIOT BA190 BACnet/IP Edge I/O Module, integrating seamlessly with the Building Automation System (BAS) via the BACnet/IP protocol. This solution enables zone-based temperature control and energy consumption analysis for the central air conditioning system.

System Architecture

  • Device Layer

  1. BA190 module collects real-time data (temperature, fan speed, valve position) from HVAC equipment (air handling units, fan coils, sensors, and actuators) via its isolated RS485 port (Modbus RTU master mode).
  2. Digital Input (DI) monitors equipment status (e.g., fault alarms), while Analog Output (AO) adjusts inverter frequency or valve openings.

  • Network Layer

  1. BA190's dual Ethernet ports support BACnet/IP, connecting directly to the building's LAN and communicating with BMS platforms.
  2. Built-in hardware watchdog and electrical isolation ensure stable operation in harsh industrial environments.

  • Management Layer

The central management platform processes BACnet/IP data from BA190 to: Implement zoned temperature control: Adjusts airflow based on real-time occupancy and thermal demands in different areas (e.g., offices, retail spaces).

Analyze energy consumption: Tracks runtime and peak loads, optimizing HVAC schedules to reduce waste.

Key Functionality

  • Smart Zoning Control

The BA190's 16-bit AI module (Y31/Y33) measures temperature/humidity, triggering automated responses:

  1. If a conference room exceeds setpoints, the relay output (Y24 module) activates auxiliary fans.
  2. During non-business hours, DO signals shut off HVAC terminals in unoccupied zones.

  • Energy Efficiency Optimization

  1. The module converts equipment power data (4–20mA signals) into BACnet Analog Input objects for cloud analysis.
  2. AI algorithms identify high-consumption periods and switch to low-energy modes (e.g., reducing nighttime ventilation).

  • Remote Maintenance & Scalability

  1. Engineers configure PID settings via the built-in web server, eliminating on-site visits.
  2. I/O expansion slots allow adding modules (e.g., Y51 for PT100 sensors) to monitor chilled water pipes.

The BLIIOT BA190 module combines multi-protocol support, rugged design, and flexible I/O expansion to modernize commercial HVAC systems. Its BACnet/IP compatibility simplifies integration while providing actionable data for sustainable building management—aligning with global carbon-neutral goals.
