Becoming Digital: Equinor
The energy transition is the greatest challenge of our time. It will require multiple paths, including renewables like wind power, to meet global demand. Without scale, though, wind power will never achieve its full potential as part of the renewable revolution.
That’s why Equinor is on a mission to scale up wind power capacity at a global level. One of the world’s largest offshore wind operators, the energy giant is already providing more than one million European homes with renewable power from offshore wind and is currently developing new offshore wind projects in the US, UK, and Poland.
Still, designing and building offshore wind farms is an enormous undertaking. By co-developing software solutions and leveraging advanced simulations in the Microsoft cloud, Equinor can rapidly evaluate concepts using the industrial metaverse. This allows Equinor to design, build, and operate a digital wind farm before it’s ever built. This approach to a virtual assessment before implementation in the physical world allows the company to do more with less: deliver capacity faster, more sustainably, and in a cost-effective way while reducing its carbon footprint.
Looking ahead, the company has long term ambitions to leverage industrial metaverse concepts to improve the offshore wind transition, according to Hege Skryseth, Executive Vice President at Equinor. Doing so will accelerate its progress toward net zero emissions by 2050, while ensuring its ability to continue supplying sustainable energy solutions for the future.
