Beyond the Polish: What Really Matters in Job Interviews ➤
I recently came across a post by Moses maweu that really struck a chord with me. He spoke about the power of working on the invisible things—not your outfit, hair, or nails—but your presence, your tone, your confidence, and that elusive inner peace that radiates without saying a word.
And I couldn’t agree more.
As someone who has walked into more interviews than I can count—wearing the right clothes, armed with a great handbag and a polished look—I’ve come to learn that what truly sets people apart are the things you can’t wear: your mindset, your authenticity, and how aligned you are with your purpose.
Let me share a quick story.
One interviewer once asked me bluntly, "Why are you looking for employment?" Another asked me to write him a business proposal instead of hiring me. I actually did it. But when I asked why he couldn’t just give me the job, he said, "Your desires don't align with being an employee." I tried to explain myself, but his mind was made up.
At first, I was frustrated and honestly a bit lost. But because I don't quit easily, I kept applying. 2016 was a whirlwind—confusing and eye-opening. It was also the year I decided to try self-employment. I say “try” because it's still evolving—it's not yet a fully running business with a team, but we’re building, and that counts.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing snippets of my job-seeking journey—the highs, the heartbreaks, and the lessons that shaped the woman I am today.
Because staying strong when all you want to do is soak in misery isn’t easy. But I believe in something bigger than self-pity. I believe in dreams. And I believe in sharing stories that make others feel less alone.
So if you're still figuring things out, you're not alone. Leave a comment or reply and let me know what part of the job search journey you’d like me to talk about. I promise to show up for you 💞
Because when we elevate each other, we grow—and that’s how we inspire meaningful change. 💯
