The Bitter Truth: If AI Is Everyone’s Responsibility, Accountability Must Come First

As artificial intelligence rapidly transforms global industries, a profound contradiction is emerging: AI is touted as everyone’s responsibility - yet accountability is still missing in action.

Every organization today is learning, experimenting, and scaling AI tools. And with each day, models are retrained, datasets are altered, and capabilities evolve. But governance, policy, and oversight are still struggling to keep pace. What does that mean for safety, security, and trust?

If AI evolves daily, our governance frameworks, industry standards, and regulatory mandates must evolve daily too. But in reality, they lag.

AI Accountability Isn’t Optional - It’s Overdue

The pace of AI deployment has outstripped our ability to ensure safety. We’ve seen this story before in social media, in cybersecurity, in cryptocurrency. And now, AI threatens to repeat it on a much larger, more dangerous scale.

must be mandatory, not optional features wrapped in PR statements.

Case Study 1: The COMPAS Scandal - AI in Justice Gone Wrong

In the U.S., the COMPAS algorithm, used to assess the likelihood of re-offending, was shown to disproportionately flag Black defendants as high-risk. Despite being adopted by court systems, the tool lacked transparency, explainability, and fairness. none of the five core pillars were met.

The impact? Lives were altered based on opaque math.

Case Study 2: Clearview AI - When Facial Recognition Meets Ethical Blind Spots

Clearview AI scraped billions of images from public websites without consent and offered facial recognition services to law enforcement agencies. Though legal action followed in the EU, Australia, and Canada, the damage was done, a textbook example of “build first, govern later.”

Would this have passed under ISO 42001? Under GDPR’s data minimization? Under India’s DPDP Act? Under a UN-led ethical AI assessment?

The answer is clear: No.

To truly govern AI, we need cross-border governance coordination as much as innovation. Several frameworks already exist or are emerging:

🌐 ISO 42001 (AI Management System Standard)

  • The first global AI-specific standard, driving responsible lifecycle-based management.

  • Aligns risk, compliance, and trust-building practices.

  • Startups and vendors should integrate this early - not post-breach.

🌍 UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of AI (2021)

  • Adopted by 193 member states.

  • Focuses on inclusion, sustainability, and human rights.

  • Calls for regulatory sandboxes to test and verify AI systems before launch.

🇪🇺 EU AI Act (2024)

  • Classifies AI systems by risk category.

  • Enforces pre-market conformity assessments, transparency, and registration for high-risk systems.

  • Fines non-compliance up to €35 million or 7% of global revenue.

🇮🇳 India’s DPDP Act + Draft AI Framework (In Progress)

  • Will regulate consent, data fiduciary responsibilities, and ethical AI design.

  • The expected Digital India Act will embed AI obligations deeply across sectors.

🇺🇸 NIST AI Risk Management Framework (RMF)

  • A voluntary, enterprise-aligned framework focusing on trustworthiness, explainability, and resilience.

  • Increasingly adopted across critical infrastructure sectors.

These are not theoretical documents. They are blueprints for building AI we can trust.

What AI Builders and Startups Must Do - Today

Startups often push back: "We’re moving fast; we can’t afford full compliance early."

But here's the truth: You can't afford not to. If your AI harms people, your brand, product, and funding can collapse overnight.

The Non-Negotiables:

  1. 🔒 Build with governance by design - bake in security, ethics, and compliance from the ground up.

  2. 🔍 Conduct bias and fairness assessments - particularly across race, gender, and language.

  3. 📜 Ensure explainability and audit trails - users deserve to know how decisions were made.

  4. 🧩 Align with global standards like ISO 42001, NIST RMF, and sector-specific rules.

  5. 🧪 Participate in red-teaming and AI safety testing - before market release.

The Role of Buyers and Enterprises

If you're an enterprise adopting AI tools, you're equally responsible.

Buying non-compliant AI is like buying food without checking for expiry.

Demand:

  • Transparency reports

  • Risk mitigation measures

  • Third-party audit results

  • Privacy guarantees

  • Regulatory readiness

Because when your vendor fails, it’s your data, your users, and your reputation on the line.

The Future Is Shared - But Guarded

AI holds promise. But without shared responsibility, that promise turns into peril. The public expects and deserves AI that is safe, fair, explainable, and aligned with human values.

It’s time to shift the conversation from innovation to intention. Not just "Can we build it?" - but "Should we? And how safely?"
