Iris Slappendel's Journey from Professional Cyclist to Designer and Advocate

In the latest episode of the Ride To Success podcast, former professional cyclist Iris Slappendel shared the inspiration and vision behind her innovative cycling apparel brand, I R I S – I Ride In Style.

The podcast was originally published in August 2024

Iris's journey into the design world began during her teenage years when she started creating her clothes out of personal necessity and passion. However, her dissatisfaction with existing women’s cycling gear motivated her to launch her brand after retiring in 2016. "I wanted to make something that I wanted to wear," she explained, emphasizing her desire to create high-quality, stylish, and comfortable apparel that was missing from the market.

One of the standout aspects of I R I S is its bold and colourful design philosophy. Iris draws inspiration from a variety of sources, including art, fashion, and her travels. "Colors are a thread in all my designs," she mentioned, highlighting her preference for starting with a specific colour palette. This approach ensures that each piece is functional and reflects her vibrant personality and the diverse identities of women worldwide. Her commitment to authenticity and personal expression shines through in every collection, making I R I S a brand that encourages women to embrace their individuality on the bike.

Advocacy through The Cyclists’ Alliance

Iris’s advocacy for female cyclists extends beyond her apparel brand. Iris co-founded The Cyclists’ Alliance in 2017, an independent union supporting professional female cyclists. The motivation behind this initiative stemmed from the collective experiences of female riders who faced numerous challenges in their careers. "There was no real representation of the women's peloton in cycling among the stakeholders," Iris explained. The Cyclists' Alliance aimed to fill this gap by providing a voice for female cyclists and advocating for their rights and welfare.

Since its inception, The Cyclists’ Alliance has achieved significant milestones. One of the most notable accomplishments was the implementation of a minimum salary for WorldTour riders. Additionally, the Alliance has advocated and implemented maternity leave and improved working conditions. "We have a very good group of qualified staff members that work really hard on different projects and our objectives" Iris noted, underscoring the professional and organized nature of the Alliance.

Looking ahead, the Cyclists’ Alliance aims to continue its advocacy efforts by focusing on the sport's development at all levels. Iris highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach with better support for continental teams and grassroots development. "There needs to be more development," she stated, emphasizing the importance of creating a safe and professional environment for all riders. The Alliance also plans to expand its educational programs, providing riders with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed on and off the bike.
