I just read an article on the history of ice in an old (2014) Popular Mechanics and it's worth a read (http://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/gadgets/g1538/a-brief-history-of-ice/). The first meat was shipped in 1878 after the engineer perfected the ice-chilled railcar.
