Bringing calm to your workplace
As a boss, you have a ton on your plate! There are times where you’ll feel stressed to the max and wound up with the responsibilities you have resting on your shoulders. However, it’s important you stay calm for your employees. Anxiety and stress are contagious. If you’re constantly worrying and freaking out about work, your employees will start to do the same. This worrying and stress is not productive. All it does is cloud everyone’s minds of what should be the work day- getting the work done.
On the other hand, you staying relaxed and calm will translate into the work days of your employees. An air of clarity will come through and you’ll find that the daily tasks your employees are completing are being done to an even better degree than before. Work to calm your employees’ nerves, rather than exasperate them.
Also, don’t take yourself too seriously. Employees can feel when you’re uptight and stressed about deadlines. This won’t help them get done any faster or better, but rather slow down and interrupt the good work that’s already going on. Remind yourself throughout the day to breathe when you find yourself being stressed out. Smile and let that joy and relaxation wash over you. Much of getting the work done in a business is about setting up the culture to allow for work to be smoothly accomplished.
Make your place of work an inviting one for employees to be in and you’ll find that the quality of work will go up. This doesn’t mean a good manager never gets stressed. They do. It’s a part of life and a facet of the job. However, a good manager knows how to take that stress, acknowledge it, and deal with it. Try to work through your stress on your own terms and not involve your employees in the stress that’s inside your head. Most likely, they have enough on their plate, so your stress will only be an extra burden to their plate that distracts from the end goal of productivity.
Thank you to everyone who has been taking the time to read these bi-weekly. I hope that they help you continue to show up and be the impactful leader you are capable of being.

4yLove the article! I have been lucky to have bosses that encourage mental health days. It has really helped knowing they care about my stress and anxiety and offer a day to reset. I always come back more productive and with a clear mind. In my first job, I wasn't sure how serious this offer was and I didn't take a day until my boss took one, showing me that we all can be overwhelmed sometimes. My boss came back ready to guide and help me with more energy and patience. It taught me that I only want to work for companies that prioritize their employees to learn how to gauge their own emotions and energy level and provide solutions. That might be a mental health day, an extra 15 mins at lunch or providing quiet rooms to decompress.
