Building a Business: Why it Matters in Building Our Legacy.

The recent passing of Herbert Wigwe, C.F.R , the esteemed Group Chief Executive Officer at Access Corporation, has left many of us pondering the fragility of life and the legacies we leave behind. In the wake of his untimely demise, questions arise about the value of dedicating one's life to building a business of scale. Over the last 48 hours, I have asked myself several questions, but one that keeps recurring is: Is it worth the relentless pursuit of success, the sleepless nights, and the sacrifices made along the way? As we mourn the loss of a visionary leader, it's important to reflect on why building a business is not just about financial gain but also about leaving a lasting impact on the world.

First and foremost, I strongly believe that building a business is a testament to the human spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship. It's about daring to dream big, taking calculated risks, and turning those dreams into reality. From humble beginnings to multinational corporations, every successful business started with an idea and the courage to pursue it.

In a world constantly evolving and advancing, businesses drive progress, spur economic growth, and create opportunities for individuals and communities alike.

Moreover, building a business allows us to leave a tangible legacy that extends far beyond our own lifetimes. Unlike material possessions that may fade or be forgotten, the impact of a successful business can endure for generations to come. Whether it's a family-owned enterprise passed down from parent to child or a groundbreaking startup that revolutionizes an industry, businesses have the power to shape the course of history and leave a lasting imprint on society.

But beyond the bottom line, building a business is also about fostering a sense of purpose and fulfillment in our lives. It provides a platform to express our creativity, showcase our talents, and make a meaningful contribution to the world. For many entrepreneurs, the journey of building a business is as rewarding as the destination itself. It's about overcoming challenges, learning from failures, as Herbert always mentioned, and experiencing personal growth along the way.

Additionally, building a business allows us to create positive change in our communities and beyond. Whether through philanthropy, corporate social responsibility initiatives, or simply by providing employment opportunities, businesses have the power to uplift and empower others. By aligning our business goals with our values and principles, we can leverage our resources and influence to make a real difference in the world.

In the case of Herbert Wigwe, his legacy extends far beyond the walls of the bank he led. Through his visionary leadership, he not only transformed the financial sector but also inspired countless individuals to pursue their entrepreneurial ambitions. His commitment to excellence, integrity, and social responsibility serves as a shining example of the impact one person can have on the world through their business endeavors.

While the loss of Herbert Wigwe serves as a sobering reminder of life's uncertainty, it also underscores the importance of building a business as part of our legacy. Beyond the pursuit of profits, building a business is about leaving a lasting impact, fostering personal growth, and creating positive change in the world. As we honor the memory of visionary leaders like Herbert Wigwe, let us recommit ourselves to building businesses that not only thrive financially but also leave a legacy of inspiration, innovation, and integrity for generations to come.

Re-addressing the ideal purpose of building a business. This piece helps to shape the vision of the young entrepreneur to aim for a bigger objective rather than a short term benefits. Nice one Jide.

Indeed, if not for legacy (however defined) what are we living for? This is a worthy tribute to Wigwe. 🕊️
