Burn the Script: Why Collaboration, Not Competition, Will Save Construction

Burn the Script: Why Collaboration, Not Competition, Will Save Construction

Four years of competitor collaboration. No immediate gain. No headlines. Just a bold belief that it’s the right thing to do. This isn’t the story the industry usually tells but it’s the one we need to hear.

Key Points:

  • Andy Oram of EH Smith on fear of change: "I was told, 'I'd rather retire than do something different.' That mindset is holding us all back."
  • Dave Mills of Lyons & Annoot Ltd on values-led leadership: "We did it for 4 years with zero benefit. Why? Because it was the right thing."
  • Mathew Davies Vandersanden UK on true sustainability: "You can’t move the industry forward in isolation. Competitor collaboration is the only way to tackle the big challenges."

This episode flips the script on what leadership should look like in construction... slower wins, bigger purpose, lasting legacy.

This is just a taste. The full blog goes deeper into the conversation with Andy, Dave, and Mat on collaboration, leadership, and low-carbon construction.

Four years of quiet graft behind the scenes - that’s rare. More of this long-game thinking is what the industry actually needs. Short-term metrics can’t compete with earned trust. Loved this.

It was great to sit down and just have that chat. Collaboration is a word that is thrown around by so many people who are simply not doing it- it’s an in word like mentor. The words are used so often by people when it’s simply not true I am thinking of not using either word 😂 hard when our apprenticeship scheme is MentorMe. But this is true collaboration, true desire to do better and true no holes barred no clever edited podcast ❤️ thanks Rebecca for facilitating this conversation and our individual conversations

Build bridges, not walls! Metaphorically of course. Actual walls are quite important...
