Can You AI My Website? A Real-World Look at Making Your Site AI and Voice Search Ready

A customer contacted me yesterday and asked, “Can you AI my website… whatever that means? Make it voice search ready? Or have content that can be useful for AI searches?”

At first glance, it sounds a bit vague. But the more I thought about it, the more I realised it’s a really valid question — and one we’ll be hearing a lot more often. The person asking had clearly picked up bits and pieces in their own research and was trying to piece it all together. And let’s face it, most business owners are in the same boat.

So here’s how I broke it down. There are really three parts to that question, and each one opens the door to some very real and very practical action you can take.

1. Making Your Site AI Ready (Technical SEO Still Matters)

This is the bit that’s not actually new, even though we’re wrapping it up in AI terms now. Making your site "AI ready" starts with solid technical SEO.

That means setting up your site in a way that machines, whether that’s Google’s search bots or more advanced AI models can easily understand and navigate. You want to make sure things like your H1 and H2 tags are structured properly to show the hierarchy of information on your pages. You want your site speed optimised, because if it’s slow to load, users (and bots) won’t wait around.

Then there’s schema markup. It’s a way of tagging content to tell search engines what it is, whether it’s a product, a review, a recipe, or a FAQ. This helps AI models understand the context of your content and serve it up in rich results. You also want to make sure your robots.txt file is correctly configured so that search bots can access what they need to.

These are the foundations. Without them, no matter how clever your content is, it might never get seen.

Here is a bullet point (LLMs love bullet points) list of things you need to do to make your site AI friendly:

  • Keep your content clean and structured We build pages with clear HTML and smart formatting so both people and machines can understand what’s what. No clutter, just clarity.

  • Let the right bots through We make sure your and firewall settings aren’t accidentally blocking AI crawlers. If they can’t get in, they can’t help you rank.

  • Put the good stuff where it counts Your most important messages shouldn’t be buried. We make sure your key content loads fast and appears near the top — where it gets seen.

  • Use smart tags and structured data We’ll help you implement semantic HTML, metadata and schema markup so AI models and search engines know exactly what your content is about.

  • Add an file This emerging standard lets you declare your site’s availability to language models — we stay ahead of trends like this so you don’t have to.

  • Check your content’s AI-friendliness We can audit your site to see how visible and useful your content is to AI tools, including how well it performs in featured snippets, voice search, and conversational results.

2. Voice Search Ready (Think in Conversations, Not Keywords)

Now, when someone says “voice search ready,” I take that to mean: Will my content show up when someone asks their phone or smart speaker a question?

This is where SEO has really started to evolve. Instead of typing in short keyword phrases like “cheap red kettle”, people are asking more conversational questions: “What’s the best kettle to buy that’s energy efficient and ideal for one or two cups?”

That’s a huge shift. It means your content has to feel more like a conversation with a real person and less like a page crammed with keywords. It also means understanding the intent behind the search. People aren’t just looking for a product, they are looking for advice, comparisons and personal experiences.

This is where geo-generative search optimisation comes in, it’s about showing up in searches that are specific to location and context. If someone nearby says, “Where can I get a sustainable office chair near me?” and your business fits the bill, you want your site to be part of that conversation.

Creating voice search-friendly content means writing naturally. Think about how people talk, not just how they type.

3. Content That’s Useful for AI Searches (Answer Questions, Solve Problems)

The final part of the question, creating content that’s useful for AI searches ties closely to the voice element, but goes a step further.

AI tools like ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini or Microsoft Copilot aren’t just indexing websites the way old-school search engines did. They’re parsing content to extract answers. That means they favour clear, concise, well-structured information. FAQs, bullet points, and helpful how-tos go a long way.

You want your content to anticipate every possible question a customer might ask. Break things down. Don’t just say what your product does, explain how it compares to others, who it’s best for, what problems it solves. This isn’t fluff; it’s the kind of content AI looks for when building answers.

And then there’s video.

Video is a massive part of AI-driven search. AI models are now analysing video, transcribing audio into text, and using that to feed search results. Short-form content from YouTube, TikTok, even LinkedIn is increasingly showing up in results. So even if it’s not your video being featured, it could be your product or your advice being repeated or reshared.

If you’re not creating video yet, now’s a good time to start.

Don’t Forget the Human Element

All of this is exciting, but here’s what I keep coming back to.

At some point, someone searching will want to talk to a person. They’ll want reassurance, a recommendation, or just the sense that there’s someone behind the brand who gets it. That’s where relationship-building still matters.

AI might help you get found. But trust, reputation, and human connection still close the deal.

And this is where traditional marketing still holds so much value. Being visible in your community, showing up at events, having real conversations that feed into your online presence in ways most people underestimate. Someone sees your name pop up in a search and thinks, “Oh yes, I met them last week at that networking event. They seemed really switched on.” That matters.
