Cap & Gown to Life's Playground
College graduation is a momentous occasion—a milestone that marks the culmination of years of hard work, late-night study sessions, and lifelong friendships. I had the privilege of celebrating graduation at UCLA this weekend. Sitting in Pauley Pavilion and listening to inspirational speeches by celebrities and accomplished students were motivating. Each speaker acknowledges the years of hard work that had led up to this moment. Looking into the sea of students as they sit, legs bouncing rhythmically in anticipation, and faces bright with smiles as they greet their friends, it is a mix of excitement and trepidation that comes with all new beginnings... the unknown path ahead.
The Symbolism of Graduation
Graduation ceremonies are rich with symbolism. The cap and gown, shifting the tassel from right to left, hearing your name called, and receiving a diploma as you walk the stage in front of family and friends—all these things signify the closing of one chapter and the opening of another. Graduation can cause mixed emotions: pride in accomplishments, sadness at leaving behind a familiar environment, and excitement for what lies ahead. This emotional complexity is a natural part of any significant life transition.
The Adventure Begins
For new graduates, the world is filled with possibilities. Stepping into their first job, continuing their education, or exploring different paths, the adventure ahead is both exhilarating and daunting. This sense of embarking on a new journey is not unique to college graduates; it is a universal experience that accompanies all new beginnings. Enter this new adventure much like you would visiting a new city. Navigate the unfamiliar streets by asking locals for directions and discovering a charming coffee shop along the way. Allow every wrong turn to be a mini adventure of its own.
New Beginnings Throughout Life
New beginnings happen throughout life, from our first day of school to the first day of a new job or even the first day of retirement. Each new beginning allows us to learn and grow as we become the best version of ourselves. The excitement and uncertainty accompanying every new beginning can be reminiscent of the feelings experienced during graduation.
Starting a New Job: Much like all the "first day of school," entering the workforce or starting a new job involves adapting to a new environment, building new relationships, and proving oneself. It is a time to apply skills we've learned and learn from new experiences.
Beginning a Relationship: Entering a new relationship is another form of a new beginning. It involves learning about another person, building trust, and growing together. Just as college teaches the importance of collaboration and communication, relationships (personal and professional) thrive on these same principles.
Reinventing Oneself: Life's challenges often lead to personal reinvention. Whether it's after a career setback, personal loss, or a significant life change, the ability to start anew is a testament to resilience and adaptability. This is similar to the reinvention many feel when they graduate and transition out of the role of student.
Becoming a Manager: Transitioning into a managerial role is another significant new beginning. It involves learning to lead and manage teams. Taking on new and greater responsibility. Like the confidence and leadership skills developed in college, becoming a manager requires continuous learning, effective communication, and inspiring and guiding others.
Lessons from Graduation
The college experience offers so many life lessons. Graduation is the first step in the next phase of life. Here are a few lessons to take from graduation:
Lifelong Learning: Graduation might be the end of an academic career, but it is not the end of learning. Become a lifelong learner. Stay curious, continue to seek knowledge, master a new skill, and be open to new experiences.
Build a Support Network: Just as family, friends, and mentors provide support in college, having a network of supportive people is crucial in any new beginning. Surround yourself with individuals who encourage and inspire you. If your workplace has a formal mentor program, sign up to participate and pay attention to the informal mentors or sponsors you might find.
Set Goals: Clear goals provide direction and motivation. Both personal and professional goals are important. Setting and striving for goals helps maintain focus and drive. Write your goals down, and post them somewhere you see regularly. Review and revise your goals, follow your progress, and hold yourself accountable.
Embrace Change: Change is inevitable and necessary for growth. Sometimes, the greatest joys in life are not what you had planned but are a result of a change of plans. Embracing change with an open mind and positive attitude can turn challenges into opportunities.
Be Resilient: Resilience—the ability to recover and adapt—is critical to navigating challenges and emerging stronger. New beginnings come with setbacks and failures, and all outcomes have a lesson in them.
The Bigger Picture
Each new beginning, whether a college graduation or another life transition, contributes to the larger tapestry of our lives. This patchwork quilt is made of all the skills, experiences, and lessons learned at each stage, preparing us for the next and creating a continuous cycle of growth and evolution. These moments are not isolated; they build upon each other, shaping our journey and defining our path.
Celebrating New Beginnings
As I looked around at the thousands of UCLA students who were graduating, it was hard not to get sentimental in the moment. I saw the powerful symbol of new beginnings.
Congratulations, graduates, on your achievements, and welcome to the next phase of your journey.
Having spent the weekend at UCLA, I'd be amiss not to quote the American icon and legendary UCLA Bruins Men's Basketball Coach, John Wooden: "Things work out best for those who make the best of how things work out." So, as you start a new journey after college, start a new job, or start a new business, embrace the adventure with an open heart and mind—the best is yet to come!
Cheers to the journey ahead and all the possibilities it holds!
