Children and Gardens!
Children do not like being reprimanded. They need to be disciplined in such an unobtrusive and gentle manner that they should not realize that they are being mannered and shaped.
So, is it with the gardens. They don’t like to be bullied. They need to be cared for and disciplined in a similar unobtrusive and gentle manner that they should not realize that they are being pruned and shaped.
You see, children and gardens react the same way to your touch, your talk and to your behavior towards them. Run roughshod over them and they are bound to shrivel in their growth…tend to them with care and they will blossom into beautiful characters.
So, when you allow the children to tend to the gardens, what you get is a wonderful combination of curiosity and creativity unleashing unexpected wondrous results.
Sadly, very few households realize the potential they have right under their noses and so, plod on, without tapping it to create beautiful gardens in their homes.
Maybe you should give them a break from the burdensome textbook reading and take them to your balcony, your porch, your front patch, your backyard – give them a trowel, a bucket, some plants and soil – and watch them create magic!!
