Chirigunia’s Young Footballer Steps Forward

Chirigunia’s Young Footballer Steps Forward

In a village in Odisha’s Kaliapani region, Chirigunia, football, became more than just a game for 12 year old Kuna Majhi.  At OMC High School, between books and the ball, Kuna has found a rhythm of his own. His recent selection for the preparatory camp of the Odisha Sub Junior Boys Football Team isn’t just a milestone, but a proof of what a discipline practice beyond all odds can lead to!

Kuna Majhi’s story talks about everyday challenges that is supported by steady encouragement. Born to Smt. Hira Majhi and the late Bhagaban Majhi, he grew up alongside three elder brothers, with his eldest brother working in the mines to support the family.

His first steps into the game began at the Grassroot Football Coaching Centre in Malharsahi. Under the guidance of Mr. Naren Tudu, he discovered the technique, training, and focus that he needed to pursue football seriously. Today, under the mentorship of coach Mr. Kalpatru Dehury, he continues to sharpen his game, practising every morning from 6 to 8 am.

Kuna’s journey has not been without setbacks.  On one occasion, Kuna missed a trial because he lacked the right documents. Instead of being taken aback by this, he promised himself to try again and continued with his practice. That resilience carried him through district-level matches, where selectors began to notice his tackling and passing skills.

His coach, Mr. Kalpatru Dehury, shares: "I have been coaching players in Grassroot Football Coaching Center, Malharsahi since last 1 year. In the center everyday, I train 20 children from 6am to 8am, this is an important time of my day. During this time I try to train players in as much football techniques as possible. Among these players Kuna Majhi has been selected for preparation camp of U-14 Odisha football team. As Kuna's coach, I am proud of him and wish him best of luck."

Supported by his community, family, and coaches, Kuna has shown how opportunity combined with persistence can open new doors. As he steps into the state camp, he carries with him not only his own determination but also the hopes of his village. In his own words, "Football makes me feel alive. Every time I step on the field, I believe my future can be bigger than my village."
