The Coffee Rose Quickcup in action!

The Coffee Rose's Newest Flower: Quickcup

The Coffee Rose was designed around the way that we taste and teach tasting. We know that you can taste. The challenge for many people isn't tasting but instead is cutting through the noise and connecting that tasting experience to language. Connecting to language is important both for communicating and sharing experience with others, and also for opening the scope of the experience that we have in the first place.

Descriptors are the signposts and landmarks that we use to explore the the contours and hidden corners of a coffee. Others use them to understand what we tasted, where we went, and how we got there. We also use them ourselves to open up our experience while tasting. They help us survey the landscape and mark out where we're going. That's why the Coffee Rose is set up for you to tell it what you taste and nothing else. Why waste palate on attributes that aren't there or aren't relevant? What good are directions to avoid turning down roads that doesn't exist?

This is what we built the Coffee Rose to do, and we're really happy with how well it does it. But we're not done. Coffee moves fast. Not every tasting is a cupping, part of a flight, or formal at all. Sometimes tasting is even just for fun ... because we like coffee! Our goal is for the Rose to keep pace with the taste of coffee. The easier it is to use, the more applicable, the more often we use it and the more situations that we use it in, the more fluid, efficient, and creative we become with using it and tasting coffee, and the more deeply it helps us build the foundations of our tasting habits.

We want the Coffee Rose to make formal cupping as authentic and natural as informal tasting, and informal tasting as valuable as formal cupping.

We developed the new Quickcup feature with a focus on this latter goal.

The Quickcup feature allows you to bypass entering coffees and pre-building flights. Tap the button to do what you actually want to do: start tasting and describing coffees! Quickcup allows you to taste and add coffees on the fly and backfill as much or little coffee info as you want whenever it's convenient: before the tasting, during cool down, during discussion, or whenever else.

Honestly, it's kinda awesome. In a specialty world where coffee value tm is more and more formulaic, reductive, and aimed at abstracting us away from coffee, I'm actually stoked about the way that the Coffee Rose is focused on tasting coffee and the way that the new Quickcup feature just doubles tf down on that.
