COP26 needs ‘Bigger-Brighter and Bolder’ targets
The shattered world is still struggling to recover and rebuild from the devastation, caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and now, planning to reconvene for ‘reaffirming its commitment to tackling climate change’ in November 2021.
Negotiators and parties need to take cognizance of the fact that COP26 would need a new narrative on climate change negotiations because of the disrupted mitigation and adaptation works, caused by the COVID pandemic. It is pertinent to recognize that the global supply chain of energy, resource efficiency, clean techs are disrupted as well as the ‘risk bearing’ capacities of LDCs, SIDs are significantly reduced.
Hence, COP26 is expected to ‘redirect’ the discussion and negotiation in a ‘pandemic scenario’, which aggravates the crisis deeper than what we faced and discussed during COP.25. The contents of negotiation texts should have that audacity in expanding its boundaries beyond the article.6, NDCs’ target and strengthening the GCF and GEF, other financial instruments, and emphasizing on resilience-based ecosystem landscape management.
The big question, which should be answered in COP.26 is ‘can the world leaders empower vulnerable people of this world to increase their income and productivity, and improve their overall well-being? Indeed, we need to wait to find an answer to this question until the 12th of November 2021.
