The Costliest Mistake in Coaching Isn’t What You Think

The Costliest Mistake in Coaching Isn’t What You Think

Most industries measure labor in hours. Coaching measures labor in heart.

But here’s the sting: while the industry has grown by over 50% in recent years, most coaches still find themselves invisible in the marketplace. More noise. More competition. And paradoxically—less traction.

It’s not because they lack skill. It’s because they lack clarity.

The Silent Tax of Vagueness

Every day, brilliant coaches are paying an invisible tax. They pour themselves into clients, they sharpen their skills, they invest in learning—yet when asked the simplest question, “So, what do you do?”—they stumble.

They ramble. They minimize. They wrap their brilliance in vague words that don’t land.

And the opportunity slips away.

Clients don’t buy “coaching.” They buy clarity. They buy a confident message they can remember, repeat, and trust. Without it, the most worthy labor gets ignored.

Why Clarity Matters More Than Ever

The marketplace is crowded. Certifications are everywhere. Programs are multiplying. Social feeds are stuffed with voices promising transformation.

So what decides who cuts through? Not the loudest coach. Not the busiest coach. Not even the most credentialed coach.

It’s the clearest coach.

Clarity is what earns attention in the first seven seconds of meeting someone. Neuroscience shows impressions form instantly—and words are the shortcut.

Clarity is what builds trust. A confused prospect hesitates. A clear one leans in.

Clarity is what scales your impact. When people can explain your value to others in one sentence, your work travels farther than you ever could on your own.

The Paradox Every Coach Faces

Coaches spend their days giving clarity to others. They cut through fog. They draw out insights. They move clients toward precision and power.

And yet, when it comes to their own work, many coaches live in vagueness.

The paradox is painful: you can be transformational in depth, but if you stumble at the surface, no one gets to see it.

A Client Story: From Fog to Flow

Last month, I worked with a coach who had over 15 years of experience. Her sessions were transformational—clients left in tears of relief and hope. But when she introduced herself at networking events, she’d say:

“I help people unlock their potential and step into their best selves.”

It sounded nice, but it was vague. People smiled politely and moved on. Her work stayed hidden.

Together, we stripped away the fog. We rewrote her pitch into one clear sentence:

“I help women executives cut their workweek by 10 hours without sacrificing results.”

The shift was immediate. At her very next event, two people asked for her card. One became a client within a week.

Her talent didn’t change. Her clarity did.

Three Shifts Every Coach Can Make This Week

Lead with outcomes, not process. Clients don’t care how many steps you have in your framework. They care about what changes for them.

Cut the jargon. Replace “transformational frameworks” with language your neighbor could understand.

Practice until it feels natural. Confidence isn’t about bravado. It’s about clarity so familiar it feels like breathing.

The Labor Day Challenge

This week isn’t about working harder. It’s about honoring your work. Coaching is one of the most worthy forms of labor—but worthy labor deserves words that dignify it.

So here’s your challenge: Write a 30-second pitch today that names the transformation you create. Strip away the noise. Make it sharp. Speak it until it feels like conviction, not hope.

And if you want help, I’ve built something for you.

Call to Action

This week, I’m giving away the Clarity Pitch Builder Workflow. It’s a plug-and-play tool that helps you create a 30-second and a 2-minute pitch that cuts through noise, honors your labor, and makes your value undeniable.

👉 Comment LABOR and DM me your email, and I’ll send it to over.

Because clarity isn’t just decoration—it’s survival. And this Labor Day, it’s time your labor was finally recognized for what it’s worth.

Such a powerful reminder, Divya. I see the same in leadership programs, brilliant leaders who can inspire teams but struggle to articulate their own value in a sentence.

Clarity truly is the difference between being overlooked and being remembered, especially in a crowded coaching space. I like the idea of treating vagueness as a “silent tax”. It frames the cost in a way that really hits home.

So very true. Most of my work is helping coaches explain what they do and who they help. Love it.
