Could GenAI reignite the Agile Movement?

It’s been a week since we at iqbusiness wrapped up a series of workshops with our partner, Jason Molesworth from Accelerated Innovation Group . The focus? Aligning around our vision, strategic intent, and action plan to support our ambition of becoming the Go-To™ AI integrator in Africa and beyond.

From a personal perspective, I’ve been grappling with how AI—and GenAI in particular—will impact my business, which is all about helping individuals, teams, and organisations adopt Agile ways of working. I have no doubt it will have an impact. The real challenge is how I need to pivot and stay agile (excuse the pun) in order to respond to the disruption GenAI is bringing to the Agile and consulting space.

Here are some of my reflections:

  • Agile budgets will come under pressure. Many organisations will prioritise investing their already stretched change/project budgets into GenAI—enabling their people, and buying into tools and platforms—rather than Agile transformation or training.
  • At iqbusiness, our Agility team is well-placed to respond. We’ve got a strong track record in transformation initiatives. We’ve developed effective change management models, tools, and techniques that help clients adopt Agile. We now have the opportunity to bring these same strengths to the GenAI transformation journey.
  • There is no other way to build GenAI solutions than with Lean and Agile methods. Think Lean Startup, Scrum, Kanban. And as organisations begin to scale their GenAI capabilities? They’ll need Agile at scale. While some Agile efforts may have plateaued, this could reignite and re-energise Agile adoption and maturity in many organisations.
  • Why is Agile the only approach that makes sense for GenAI?
  • Complexity. GenAI projects are riddled with evolving requirements, exponential tech changes, and high levels of uncertainty.
  • Experimentation. Teams must run small, frequent experiments to test and learn, ensuring they’re building the right thing.
  • Frequent feedback loops. Iterative and incremental development allows for accelerated learning and faster course correction.
  • GenAI is the next hype cycle—just like Agile was over the last decade – but with a much bigger impact and set of opportunities. But here’s the thing: both are trying to solve the same core problem. Organisations want to deliver better-quality products and services, more cost-effectively, and faster, so they can grow market share and boost shareholder value. Sound familiar? It’s the same promise Lean, Agile, and DevOps have been chasing all along. Maybe this time, we’ll actually deliver on it.

So here’s my message:

  • To embrace GenAI, you’ll need to be agile and responsive.
  • You’ll need to adopt Agile ways of working—better than before.
  • And you’ll need to bring the entire organisation along with you, so invest in change management.

It’s easy to see GenAI as a silver bullet—but without Agile principles, the risk of building the wrong thing, faster, increases dramatically. Your point about GenAI needing iterative, feedback-driven approaches resonates deeply. It’s not just about experimentation—it’s about intentional experimentation, backed by frameworks that know how to pivot. What excites me most is the idea that GenAI might revive Agile thinking—especially at scale. Many orgs have become “Agile in name, waterfall in practice.” GenAI could force us back to true agility: cross-functional teams, continuous value delivery, and adaptive learning loops. Curious to see how many organisations will lean into this synergy rather than treat GenAI as a siloed innovation initiative. Thanks for starting this conversation!

Biase De Gregorio, as always, was very well thought out and stated. GenAI is a hype cycle, and much like Agile, it is still not a magic elixir. In fact, if not harnessed correctly, it can fail and cause setbacks. iqbusiness is still first in class in execution and thought leadership! You're coaching and implementation across the board is world-class. I think you will continue to get it done faster and smarter than ever!

Having been in these sessions throughout the week with Jason Molesworth and our team, it is crystal clear that Agile bridges the widening chasm between people and technology in GenAI. We now have an approach to ride the wave of change underway and to share with our clients. This is the year of #GESHIDO.
