Curious AI 66 - 2025-04-04

Welcome to issue 66 of the Curious AI Newsletter, curated by Oliver Rochford , and synthesized and summarized using AI.

Articles over the past two weeks highlight a variety of different themes and developments:

Challenges in AI Adoption

There's a strong sentiment of criticality regarding AI implementation within organizations:

Adoption Decline: There are more articles that highlight failed and abandoned AI projects. One survey by S&P Global Market Intelligence reported a dramatic increase in companies abandoning AI initiatives due to integration difficulties and the absence of clear value, with a noted 46% dropout rate in enterprise adoption. Other research, this time by IDC, describes a similar picture. Microsoft now abandoning many planned data center buildouts only seems to reinforce the point that current demand isn’t growing as originally anticipated.

Public Perception: A recent survey by the Pew Research Center indicates that despite optimism by tech experts and businesspeople, most Americans believe AI will not enhance their lives. We see this disconnect between expert expectations and public concerns a lot, of course, but the number of critical articles has been steadily rising over the past year. I don’t think many people are actually convinced that they will experience a 2-day week, as AI replaces “doctors, teachers, mental health professionals, and more within the next 10 years,” as Bill Gates seems to believe. And even if, what are displaced people supposed to do in the meantime? Trying to make ten years of volatility and Hunger Games-like competition for dwindling jobs sound attractive is a hard sell, even for Bill.

Financial and Economic Perceptions

Another area of growing concern is over the financial sustainability of AI ventures:

Bubble Warnings: Several articles warn of an impending AI bubble, citing excessive investment in AI infrastructure that does not match market demand, leading to significant drops in market value, particularly because of companies like DeepSeek that are upending the business models that US tech firms are seeking to offset their huge investments.

Venture Capital Changes: A decline in investor enthusiasm is evident, as seen in companies like CoreWeave reducing IPO expectations. This suggests a cautious market shift, away from the exuberance that characterized earlier AI funding rounds. At least for some companies, but not for OpenAI, as the crazy $40B Softbank investment round proves.

Impact of AI on Workforce Dynamics

Many articles discuss the complex influence of AI on employment:

Job Quality Concerns: “Experts” warn that increasing reliance on AI in job applications could lead to hiring unqualified candidates, stressing the necessity of human judgment.

Optimism vs. Realities: Despite fears of job displacement, the FT asks quite reasonably , “Why hasn’t AI taken your job yet?,” and presents AI sensibly as an efficiency-enhancing tool rather than a direct job replacement technology.

Technological Advancements and Concerns

Articles detail both advancements and failures of AI systems:

Model Limitations: Several articles highlight a plateau in AI advancements and skepticism surrounding traditional scaling approaches, with researchers advocating for a reinterpretation of pathways to AGI.

Vibe coding versus software engineering: Innovations in code generation and completion techniques illustrate both the potential efficiency gains and the limitations in AI-assisted development. Many professional developers and engineers are becoming vocal in sharing what does and doesn’t work well right now. Vibe coding, popularized and beloved by tech bros, is now increasingly derided by software professionals, the very users investors and founders hope will sustain the rapid rise and lofty valuations of AI software agent startups. Other reports expose a shifting landscape of tools that become flavor of the month but just as quickly are  dropped and replaced with little user loyalty. Consider churn the next time you read rosy projections about annual recurring revenue from some of these mushroom startups.

Key Sentiments This Week

When viewed as a whole, what is interesting  is that 2½ years into the AI craze,  and it seems it’s still not possible to get a clear consensus on its long-term impact and potential. The confusion and uncertainty is the most difficult aspect for people to deal with. It will be hard to plan for such an uncertain and fast-evolving future. But that won’t stop me from making some predictions. 🙂

Recently there has been  a notable apprehension regarding the sustainability of the pace of AI progress:

AI will evolve gradually; articles predominate, suggesting a consensus that significant breakthroughs will take time.

However, a substantial portion still predicts AI will accelerate, indicating optimism for rapid developments, with AI as a bubble concern also highlighted, signaling potential instability.

Data rolls downhill...security is a data volume problem and we make faster & affordable search at scale for everyone

Oliver this is by far your best issue imho...I'm not going to throw stones at a sinking ship but to say we tried to temper the hype is an understatement. By way of example you probably remember master data management (MDM...unlike the more well known mobile device mgt)? Well I remember the promises of a centralized system for everyone in the business. The promise of a "single pane of glass"...never happened....hmmm I am going to resist drawing the connection forward to every other single iteration of that promise (reserved for close friends)...but none of those delivered as promised. Although our addiction to over engineering everything is creating more problems in the form of work that produces false value (among other things; there are positive uses in areas where again I'll say it,"there is high volume/low variability of data". We should refocus there.

This part reminds me of the early days of Cloud and SaaS "One survey by S&P Global Market Intelligence reported a dramatic increase in companies abandoning AI initiatives due to integration difficulties and the absence of clear value, with a noted 46% dropout rate in enterprise adoption" I'm surprised that companies abandon AI projects where majority didn't even start to implement.
