Decarbonise heating? - an impression from Stockholm

DecarbHeat: talk to the experts in Brussels

Some of you have participated at the 2017 DecarbHeat event in Brussels. At this event, we have introduced an initiative to stress that we have all technologies needed to fully decarbonise the heating (and the cooling) sector by 2050.

The initiative lives on - you can find the details at www.decarbheat.eu. By now, representatives from district heating, solarthermal, geothermal, biomass and the heat pump industry meet regularly in Brussels to discuss next steps in the process of shaping a decarbonisation trajectory. We are not only discussing among ourselves, but also with representatives from the EU Commissions DG Energy and the Members of the European Union.

Decarbonisation of heating and cooling will be the centerpiece of a decarbonised Europe. We have to significantly reduce final energy demand for heating and switch the fuels used to cover the rest to 100% CO2 emission free. The solutions compatible today at scale are Biomass boilers, solar thermal collectors, direct geothermal energy, heat pumps using renewable energy from air, water and ground, as much as waste energy. District energy grids will play an important role in delivering this energy to densly populated areas in cities.

We will discuss the concept of a decarbonised heating sector at www.eusew.eu in Brussels next week. There are many interesting sessions, but the one I would really like you to attend when it comes to decarbheat is on 7.6.2018 from 14:00 - 15:30 in the Charlemagnes largest meeting room - De Gasperi.

Moderated by Philippa Nutall Jones (www.foresightdk.com, @jones_pippa) we will hear the Commission perspective on a strong heating/cooling focus not only in the current policy discussion, but also in the 2050 energy roadmap.

This is followed by interventions from Florian Knobloch from Radboud university in the Netherlands, who will present the findings from the comparatively new FTTHeat study (@radboud_uni).

Michael Steurer, Energy Attachée at the Austrian Representation to the European Union (@austriaateu) will reflect on the challenges to decarbonise the heating sector from the Member State level.

These introductions will prepare the background for a discussion with industry representatives from Biomass (@aebiom), Geothermal (@EGEC_geothermal), solarthermal (@solarheat_EU), Cogeneration (@COGENEurope), DistrictHeating (@euroheatpower) and heat pumps (@helloheatpumps, @EPEESecretariat) on the potential of different, CO2 free solutions, their challenges and the necessary support framework to make them the mainstream of 2050.

You can still register to this event at www.eusew.eu
