Dennis H. Miller’s Circular Reasoning Drops Tomorrow on Sedition — A Hypnotic Exploration of Form, Sound, and the Infinite Shape

I had a chat with Dennis recently, one of the most respected voices in the world of audiovisual art, as he returns to Sedition tomorrow with an exciting new collection. Titled Circular Reasoning, this triptych of real-time generative works builds on decades of boundary-pushing exploration at the intersection of code, sound, and moving image.

For those unfamiliar with Miller’s work, his contributions to the field of visual music are foundational. A Professor Emeritus at Northeastern University and the founder of the influential Visual Music Marathon, Miller’s career has consistently blurred the line between composer and visual artist. He’s known for crafting works that are both mathematically rigorous and deeply emotive — where custom algorithms become tools of expression, not just automation.

His latest collection, Circular Reasoning, dives into the geometry of the circle — a form both universal and symbolic. Each of the three animations is built on a unique procedural logic and paired with an original score. The result is a unified audiovisual experience where form and sound evolve together, live.

  • Bead Game presents a meditative dance of tiny spheres weaving through a wireframe matrix — controlled, deliberate, and subtly entrancing.

  • Spherical Dance bursts with energy — a kinetic display of transformation that’s fast-paced, chaotic, and impossible to pin down.

  • Circular Reasoning, the titular work, offers a contemplative expansion outward, inviting viewers into a reflective rhythm of return.

When I asked him what guided this body of work, he shared:

“I’ve always been drawn to the idea that complexity can emerge from simplicity. The circle is the perfect starting point — timeless, elegant, and infinitely transformable. With these works, I wanted to explore how motion, color, and music could evolve from that one idea without repeating themselves — a kind of meditation on the possibilities of return.”

Longtime fans of Miller’s work will recognize the precision and poetics that defined earlier pieces like Watch Me Work, a personal favorite of mine — where layered rhythms, visual tension, and meticulous composition coalesce into something deeply resonant. Circular Reasoning builds on that foundation while offering an entirely new visual language.

Don’t Miss the Drop

Circular Reasoning drops exclusively on Sedition tomorrow, April 23rd, with just six editions of each artwork available. Whether you’re a longtime admirer of Miller’s work or discovering him for the first time, this release is not to be missed — it’s a reminder of what digital art can be when it’s guided by curiosity, discipline, and a lifelong commitment to craft.

Feel free to share this post or tag others who should know about this incredible release.
