Developing Countries Lacking Resources In Fight Against Zika
Currently, there is an all out battle against the dreaded Zika epidemic where just about every available resource is either being used, developed or being tested to fight against this deadly virus. A few of the 'weapons' being use include environmentally-friendly insecticides, genetically modified mosquitos and vaccine trials will soon commence in Canada and USA . Fetal abnormalities are also associated with Zika especially in countries like Brazil and Puerto Rico where microcephaly has been widespread. During pregnancy, microcephaly can sometimes be diagnosed with an ultrasound test in either the 2nd trimester or early in the third trimester. Ultrasound technology is widely used throughout the world but it takes specialized training in obstetric sonography to be able detect microcephaly. Unfortunately, in many developing countries including the Caribbean, ultrasound equipment is often in need of either maintenance or repairs or is outdated. International agencies like PAHO, IDB or USAID to name a few, are in a position to provide the funding needed to address the specific technical and training needs in affected countries in the region.
