Different Approach to installing the SysML V2 Pilot implementation

The SysML v2 pilot implementation (https://github.com/Systems-Modeling/SysML-v2-Pilot-Implementation) is a great way to explore SysML v2 and get started with it. The documentation on the main page shows how to install the developer environment in the Eclipse IDE. However, when you just want to explore the editors or even distribute them to less technical folks, this might be cumbersome.

Not directly visible from the documentation is another ways, which consists of

  • Building a distributable installation with Maven
  • Install the distribution into an Eclipse Installation

Building a distributable package

If you have maven installed, then the steps would be

  • Clone the reference installation repository
  • Call mvnw clean package (that script is in the root directory of the repo both for Unix and Windows)

When the run is finished, the org.omg.sysml.site/target directory will have a zip file, which can be used to install the pilot implementation into a running Eclipse through Help->Install New Software. That zip file can be passed around to anyone with a compatible Eclipse Installation without them having to set up the dev environment.
