Digital transformation has become a norm across all industries and organisations are focusing on digital transformations as one of their key strategic imperatives. As a result, new skills are growing across different roles.

How does this impact the role of a project/program manager? In this upcoming series of articles, I present my thoughts on how the era of digital transformation has impacted project management and what are quintessential steps and skills to drive these projects.

Agile, Strategic and Relationship-Focused: Must have skills for a project manager.

The first article of the series is about the changing role of a project manager and the skills necessary for success in a digital transformation environment.

While the traditional responsibilities of a project manager, such as planning, scheduling, and budgeting are still important, they are no longer enough to ensure the success of a project in today's fast-paced business environment. Project managers need to be strategic, agile, change managers, possess in-depth industry knowledge, and have excellent inter-personal skills.

Be Strategic: Project managers need to ensure that the project aligns with the overall strategic objectives of the organisation. This means they need to have a deep understanding of the organisation's goals and be able to translate them into actionable project objectives. In fact, many organisations involving project leaders in defining strategic objectives.

Be Agile: Agility is crucial in today's fast-paced business environment and project managers need to be able to pivot quickly in response to changing market conditions. Agile project management is an iterative approach that emphasises flexibility, collaboration, and rapid iteration. Agile project managers can adapt to changing requirements and deliver value quickly, which is essential in a digital transformation environment.

Be a Change Manager: Change management is a systematic approach to bringing change in processes and technologies and empowering people to adapt to these changes. Digital transformation is effective when the strategic vision of the program is successfully adopted by all the impacted stakeholders. Project managers need to possess skills of a change manager and imbibe the change plan on the overall strategy. This involves developing clear communication plans, providing training and support to stakeholders, and effectively managing resistance to change.

Possess Industry Knowledge: Industry knowledge enables project managers to identify any potential risks, new solutions and opportunities. A project manager should have a deep understanding of the industry in which they are working, be aware of industry trends, and be able to capitalize on the knowledge in driving strategy for the organisation

Enhanced Inter-personal skills: Relationship management is an essential skill for project managers, particularly in today's digital age where global projects involving cross-functional and cross-regional stakeholders are increasingly common. To ensure successful completion of such projects, project managers must be adept at building strong relationships with stakeholders across different teams and regions. This requires not only excellent communication skills but also the ability to foster active collaboration and teamwork.

Overall, the digital transformation is reshaping the role of project managers and demands a new set of skills and competencies. Therefore, it's crucial for project managers to embrace upskilling and continuously develop their knowledge and expertise to effectively lead their teams and deliver valuable outcomes for their organizations. While digital transformation creates both opportunities and challenges, project managers remain pivotal in navigating this change and driving success in their projects.
