Don't Burn Bridges: The True Cost of Losing Great Talent

I recently had a conversation that really brought this point home. A person, loyal and dedicated to their company for a decade, wanted to explore a new opportunity. Instead of fostering that relationship, the business owner burned the bridge. It was a stark reminder of how easily we can lose incredible talent.

It's a common scenario: a valuable team member approaches you, ready to explore a new opportunity outside your organization. As leaders, our instinct might be to convince them to stay, to highlight all the reasons why our company is the best place for them. But what if, in that moment of persuasion, we inadvertently burn a bridge that could have led them back?

Great people, amazing contributors, sometimes need to spread their wings and see what else is out there. If they're genuinely talented and driven, their departure isn't necessarily a reflection on your company, but rather a testament to their own ambition.

The way we handle these transitions speaks volumes about our leadership. Did you end on good terms? Did you encourage their growth, even if it meant outside your walls, or did you make them feel guilty for seeking new experiences?

The Boomerang Effect

Consider this: that "new opportunity" might not always work out. When it doesn't, where do those amazing individuals look next? Do they remember a leader who supported their journey, or one who made their departure difficult?

Many companies lose out on the chance to welcome back incredible talent because of overreactions when someone chooses to venture out. If you've fostered a culture of respect and support, even during departures, you open the door for a potential "boomerang" return. These individuals come back with new skills, fresh perspectives, and a deeper appreciation for your organization.

Let them fly. See what happens. And if they want to return, make sure they feel not just welcome, but genuinely valued. The difference in your approach can mean inviting an amazing human back into your world, or losing them to a competitor forever.

I’ve gone through this a few times and it is extremely difficult, especially after spending time and heart into an agent. The wish is always for them to succeed and do beautifully, with the hopes that you contributed at least a tiny bit to their success.
