Drax December 2024 Newsletter
In our last newsletter of 2024, we’re pleased to share some exciting updates from December. ⚡
National Energy System Operator (NESO) published its 2030 Clean Power Action Plan, which explores the steps the UK Government needs to take to meet its 2030 clean power commitment.
The report outlines the critical contribution that Drax’s biomass and pumped storage hydro assets could make to maintain UK energy security and deliver the country’s 2030 clean power target. Read more from our CEO, Will Gardiner in his statement below.
We’re delighted to share that the Drax Community Fund has donated nearly £60,000 to foodbanks near our operations in the UK, US and Canada. This provides vital assistance to individuals and families in need over the holiday period.
We’ve agreed a deal with Pathway Energy to supply over 1 million tonnes of sustainable biomass pellets per annum for their sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) project in Port Arthur, Texas.
SAF usually reduces carbon emissions by up to 80% when compared to traditional jet fuels. Once fully operational, the plant will be capable of producing 30 million gallons of carbon negative SAF annually, the equivalent of enough fuel to power 5,000 carbon neutral long-haul (10+ hour) flights per year.

We’re supporting skills development amongst young people in the UK with our brand-new virtual work experience and immersive skills bootcamp – both focussed on carbon capture and storage (CCUS).
We’re collaborating with Springpod , an award-winning careers exploration platform, to launch our first-ever Project Sprint, which gives students a virtual experience of working as a Process Engineer as part of our BECCS project. Plus, we’re offering our employees at Drax Power Station the chance to upskill their CCS knowledge through an in-depth bootcamp in partnership with Selby College . These initiatives are part of our efforts to equip young people with the expertise they need to succeed in a rapidly evolving energy industry and help tackle climate change through innovative carbon capture solutions, like BECCS.

As we approach the end of the year, we’ve been reflecting on some key moments that have shaped our journey. One particular highlight was our Cruachan Expansion Project event in September - we welcomed over 100 businesses, prospective suppliers and local communities to Oban, Scotland, where they learnt more about the wider benefits the Cruachan Expansion Project will deliver across the UK.
