These DSM CE Events Won't Make You Wanna Sneak Away to Your Room to Book an Earlier Flight

I sent a mass email to 13,000 dentists a couple weeks ago. The subject line was "Most DSM CE Is Like Eating a Sh!t Sandwich." The open and CTR were 4x our average, and 5 people registered for the 2026 Transform Dental Sleep Symposium because of that email. Sure, I was trying to grab some eyeballs, and it worked. While I am patting myself on the back for the catchy subject line (or maybe I'm self-flagellating), I can't take credit for the sentiment in the email.

Why? Because it's a sentiment that's been shared with me by hundreds of dentists over the years. It's why I originally started the NADSM Symposium before walking away from it to start the TDS Symposium. Dentists told me they felt that most DSM CE fell into one of two categories:

1. Sales event masquerading as education. Many opined that DSM CE events felt like a timeshare with a little education woven into a big sales pitch, or
2. Impractical, boring academia with little real-life application. I used to hear this a lot about a big-annual-meeting-that-will-go-unnamed-as-to-avoid-any-further-schism.

It doesn't have to be that way though. Fortunately, several upcoming education opportunities marry the art with the science of dental sleep medicine. A Hands-on Continuum in Sleep-Related Disorders and Health Solutions

This 4 session University-based program presented by John Tucker, DMD, DABDSM, DICOI and Jeffrey S. Hindin, DDS, FICOI, DABPMD centers on problem-based learning through a combination of lectures, online content, case presentations, and hands - on experience. The breadth of this educational series will examine the physiological etiology of sleep related disorders and the potential strategies for treatment. Be prepared to expand your mind and ultimately help your patients. Participants will begin with the initial patient experience that encompasses a review of the process for screening, examination, testing and comprehensive evaluation. This will proceed to the coverage of treatment options, exploring the benefits and conceivable issues for each modality. The curriculum will also consist of a detailed narrative on office set up and billing for the Sleep Related Disorder patient. The Course will consist of 65 hours of live CE at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine and 18 hours of online CE. Participants who successfully complete the requirements of the course will be eligible to apply for Diplomate Status with the American Board of Physiological Medicine and Dentistry.
