Embracing neurodiversity: how AI is shaping inclusive workplaces

Did you know that 1 in 7 people in the UK are neurodivergent? As businesses begin to realise the unique strengths of these individuals, providing personalised support becomes essential. #AI tools now offer the flexibility needed to offer tailored assistance and empower these employees.

Our report The powerful impact of AI on workplace behaviour found that around half of employees now use AI at work, with 93% reporting a positive impact. While neurodiverse users aren't specified, the benefits mentioned, like time management (56%), creativity boost (28%), and reduced workload and stress (60%), are credited to generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Access Evo Copilot, which could be helpful for neurodiverse individuals.

Understanding neurodiversity in the workplace: what it really means

Neurodivergent individuals have brains that function, process, and learn differently from neurotypical individuals. This includes conditions like autism, dyslexia, ADHD, and others.

While neurodivergent individuals may face communication, focus, or sensory processing challenges, these differences can also bring strengths, such as creative problem-solving, attention to detail, and out-of-the-box thinking.

How can organisations foster an inclusive workplace?

Some organisations are leading the way in creating inclusive workplaces by embracing neuro-inclusive practices and technology. From AI transcription apps for easier note-taking to sensory-friendly spaces with quiet rooms and adjustable lighting, these businesses are fostering environments where neurodiverse employees can thrive. Offering flexible hours, noise-cancelling headphones, and task adjustments also gives them a competitive edge.

For example, our AI-enabled experience, Access Evo, acts as a friendly assistant, helping users organise and prioritise tasks with proactive alerts.

  • Discussing how leaders can create a more inclusive workplace

Following this, we’re creating a Neurodiversity Playbook to support neurodivergent employees at Access. This practical guide will provide insights, best practices, and resources for colleagues, leaders, and managers.
