Emerson DeltaV Basics: Commissioned ≠ DeltaV Download

A common misunderstanding‼️

When I first started working on DeltaV Projects, I used to think that “commissioning” meant field loop checks, function testing or System startup.

But in DeltaV language, it means something else❗

👉 DeltaV Commissioning is simply the process of bringing a controller, CIOC, or node into the system.

In this step, you (more like drag and drop):

• Assign the IP address / MAC binding

• Define the controller location in DeltaV Explorer

• Map the network path

(All of this is often assigned automatically — unlike in PLCs or other DCS brands.)

Remember, Nothing is configured yet. You're just acknowledging the hardware - like saying:

“Hey DeltaV, this Controller/CIOC exists and it's alive.”

For example:

You install a new CIOC module. It appears under “Decommissioned Nodes.” You right-click → Commission it or drag and drop from decommissioned node.

Now, it’s ready to receive configuration via Download.

✅ Download, on the other hand, is when you push your Control Strategy (logic), IO assignments, and graphics to that commissioned node.

Only after the download, the node starts behaving as per your configuration.
