Advancing Cyber Education and Diversity
Delisha leads a team of advisors at SANS Technology Institute, a role that involves educating and training future cyber leaders. "Our full goal is making sure that we educate and provide training to the world's future cyber leaders and advocates," she explains. This mission is not confined to the classroom; it extends to a broader commitment to diversity and inclusion within the cybersecurity field.
One of the standout programs Delisha discussed is the SANS Cyber Academies, which reopen for applications in June. These academies offer specialized pathways for veterans, women, and minorities, providing them with the skills and certifications needed to enter the cybersecurity workforce. "We have the Vet Success program for our veterans, the Women's Cyber Academy, and the Diversity Cyber Academy," Delisha elaborates. These programs are part of SANS' ongoing efforts to ensure that underrepresented groups have access to top-tier cybersecurity education and opportunities.
The Importance of Hands-On Experience
For those starting their cybersecurity journey, Delisha emphasizes the importance of hands-on experience. She recommends engaging in Capture the Flag events, building home labs, and volunteering. "If they're still in college or college affiliated, participating in the individual NCL or trying to group up with other people, competing teams," she suggests. Delisha also highlights the value of free resources such as Hack The Box, TryHackMe, and Cybrary for gaining practical skills without incurring significant costs.
Moreover, Delisha advises newcomers to not shy away from entry-level roles or adjacent positions in IT. "Don't be afraid to take a role that's adjacent to cybersecurity starting out," she says. "Whether you need to take that IT help desk job just to get a little experience, to get your foot in the door so people know your name." This incremental approach, often described as "taking the stairs to get to the top," allows individuals to build a solid foundation of skills and experience.
Networking and Mentorship: Keys to Success
Networking and mentorship are critical components of a successful cybersecurity career. Delisha underscores the importance of connecting with communities and organizations that support diversity in tech. "Engaging with organizations like Black Girls Hack and Blacks in Cybersecurity can provide invaluable support and guidance," she notes. These communities offer mentorship programs, professional development opportunities, and a network of like-minded individuals committed to mutual success.
Delisha also encourages established professionals to give back by becoming mentors. "If you're looking to reach back and support someone, definitely reach out to them about becoming a mentor," she says. The impact of mentorship extends beyond individual careers, contributing to a more inclusive and supportive cybersecurity ecosystem.
Navigating the Future of Cybersecurity
Our conversation also touched on the evolving landscape of cybersecurity and the increasing role of artificial intelligence (AI). Delisha shared her experiences using AI tools like BARD and Copilot to enhance her work. "I was just killing myself with thumbnails, I was killing myself with show descriptions, and then I stumbled across like, okay, I can hand this over to my AI assistant and then learn how to prompt engineer," she shares. AI tools are becoming invaluable assets for cybersecurity professionals, helping to streamline tasks and enhance productivity.
Looking ahead, Delisha is optimistic about the future of cybersecurity education and the continued growth of diversity initiatives. SANS remains committed to its mission of providing top-tier education and fostering an inclusive community. As Delisha aptly puts it, "We need people from different backgrounds, we need people with different cultures, neurodiversity, like we need all the full gamut."
Final Thoughts
Delisha Hodo's journey from a psychology graduate to a cybersecurity advocate exemplifies the diverse pathways into this dynamic field. Her work at SANS Technology Institute and her involvement with various diversity initiatives highlight the importance of inclusive education and community support. For those aspiring to enter cybersecurity, Delisha's advice is clear: leverage hands-on experience, network with others, and don't be afraid to take the stairs to success.
