Energy Savings critical for EU plan to remove Russian imports

The REPower EU action plan, published recently by the European Commission, sets a strategy to remove imports of Russian fuel imports as soon as possible.

Energy Savings is a critical component of the plan to provide energy security to the EU, alongside a major increase in renewable energy sources (RES).

The biggest area of impact will likely be the industrial sector in the form of Demand Side Response (DSR). DSR is necessary as more renewable energy enters the grid due to the variability of supply. Every time renewable energy is discussed, systems working in parallel to shift demand, will be an integral part.

One of the biggest challenges of DSR is adapting to changing energy conditions while not disrupting normal business. One of the ways to achieve that is via improved forecasting. Accurate forecasting of energy prices is a key enabler for DSR. Better price predictions allow for more effective decision-making about when to use or not use energy.

The EU is working on strengthening its internal energy market, coordinating the shifting of energy use via DSR across borders. The use of DSR can have a profound effect on energy use and can contribute to energy savings across the EU. Centralized dispatching and advanced forecasting for DSR will help support the adoption of RES. The result will be a lower cost of energy and less demand for fossil fuel imports from abroad.
