AI is everywhere now. It is the next fundamental shift that is happening in how software is built, used, and envisioned. Every industry, product, and function are being disrupted by AI. However, like the application of any new technology, there are going to be socio-economic implications of these decisions, some to a larger extent and others less, depending on the context and the task that is being handled by AI.

Recruitment is one of AI’s earliest adopters.

However, one question always looms large for developers of AI systems:

Is your AI trustworthy?

It is a very valid question. Any piece of technology that enters the realm of subjectivity needs enough scrutiny. It needs questions being asked, and enough guardrails in place to ensure that whatever results are being generated by the AI system, they are as accurate, true, and correct as they possibly can be.

How do you build AI systems that can fundamentally be trusted?

Let’s ask a basic question: how do you trust something? Fundamentally, trust stems from belief. Belief forms when you see something happening consistently and there is enough evidence to prove so. Trust is also earned by providing some control.

An AI system must produce similar outcomes when fed similar data. Reliability over time builds trust.

Your AI system needs to show, to some extent, its “inner workings.” What are the reasons that led the AI model to take a particular decision or provide a certain output or response? The user needs to get a certain sense of how the AI works, even approximately.

Control

Human-in-the-loop design is crucial. AI should assist in decision-making by highlighting relevant data, but the final decision must rest with a human. AI does the heavy lifting; humans make the informed choices. AI's role is to support, not replace.

The more AI explains itself in the initial days and becomes more transparent to the user, the faster and easier it will be for the end users to understand and trust its results.

This means AI must tie insights back to their source such as a line in the CV or a specific part of an application form. The AI’s logic must be traceable and grounded in the data.

But when the final decisions depend on nuanced, subjective understanding, humans must always have the last word.
