The Exit Interview w/ Marlinspike Skillbridge Intern Jake Weber
Today is Jake’s last day with Marlinspike as a part of the United States Department of Defense’s DoD-SkillBridge program, specifically US Army’s Individual Career Skills Program.
Jake, a Pittsburgh native, pursued his education at Purdue University, graduating with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 2017. Following graduation, he joined the US Army as a Chemical Officer and served with distinction in the 101st Airborne Division and the 5th Special Forces Group (A). During his time with the 5th Group, Jake completed two deployments to Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, where he played a vital role in accomplishing logistical objectives for the Special Operations Task Force (SOTF). After seven years of dedicated service, Jake is preparing to transition from military life to pursue a professional career outside of the military.
The Skillbridge program was set up to encourage soldiers to take advantage of training and development opportunities throughout their military careers and to provide the opportunity to participate in skills training, during their transition period, to improve their civilian employment options.
We asked him some questions on the way out:
1. Already having an interest in venture capital, what did you learn in your time with Marlinspike? Anything noteworthy?
My time with Marlinspike has taught me at length how a VC firm operates. Watching the team interact with each other and potential companies has shown me what a first-class team looks like. I could've never gained this knowledge from a classroom. From this experience, not only have I gained invaluable insights, but I also strengthened my desire towards a career in Venture capital, and for that I am thankful.
2. How did being an Army soldier prepare you for the internship at Marlinspike?
My experience as an Army soldier helped in several ways. Firstly, my background provided me with a disciplined approach to work, attention to detail, and the ability to handle high-pressure situations effectively. Secondly, having a strong understanding of the DOD’s organizational structure and processes gave me a unique perspective on tackling one of Marlinspike’s core investment principles of “Dual-Use”. Lastly, I was able to provide backup to Nick [Snoad], so that the Army wasn’t outnumbered by the Navy.
3. How will you leverage this experience in the next phase of your career?
I plan to leverage my experience at Marlinspike during my MBA program at Vanderbilt University - Owen Graduate School of Management this fall, by integrating real-world examples and insights into my coursework. This experience has shifted my mindset and prepared me to take on the challenges of business school with a deeper understanding of finance and investment principles.
4. Can you elaborate on how the CSP helped you? Can you provide your fellow soldiers with some tips on how to get the most out of this program?
The CSP provided me with the ability to break away from the military and be able to chart my own path. It gave me a chance to reflect on my goals and motivations and provided the framework of how to translate my experiences over last the 7 years into a successful career. My advice to fellow soldiers would be to fully engage with the program, take advantage of the resources available, and apply the skills learned to both personal and professional development. Building a strong foundation in these areas can greatly enhance one's success in any career path.
5. What words of advice would you offer to your fellow soldiers interested in a venture capital or finance career after their service time is complete?
For fellow soldiers interested in a venture capital or finance career after their service, I would advise them to continue learning and networking. Seek out mentorship opportunities, stay updated on industry trends, and consider pursuing further education such as an MBA to enhance skills and credibility in the field. Networking with professionals in the industry and gaining hands-on experience through internships or projects can also be invaluable.
