Experience every day like it's part of your bucket list

Experience every day like it's part of your bucket list

I entered "Bucket List" into Merriam-Webster Dictionary and got this definition:

"Bucket List: a list of things that one has not done before but wants to do before dying."

Before DYING? How...Depressing...Is...That?

First of all, how do you know WHEN you're dying? 2020's passing of a larger-than-life celebrity and athlete Kobe Bryant should have shown all of us that NO ONE knows when their last day is.

So if you don't accomplish these before dying, does that mean your life went incomplete? Isn't it a depressing ending that you already predicted for yourself?

Second, why are these items on the list so desirable that they make all the other thing you do in your daily life not "list-worthy"? Let's do the math: Say you have 100 of those things on your "bucket list." If you live to be 100 years old, you have 36,500 days on this earth. Does that means that only 0.27% of your life was worth aspiring towards and "bucket-worthy," while the rest of life just went along passively and non-memorable?

I have a problem with that math. Why? Because I believe EVERY DAY of life should be experienced as another item on one's bucket list.

So I'm writing this article (on my patio, drinking coffee and putting pen to paper, another daily bucket list item I have for myself) to discuss how you can experience EVERY DAY going forward from here on in as if it's part of your bucket list.

I'm writing this to help anyone I can so they will have thousands more items to their "bucket list" because they are do-able and within reach. I have received way too many calls from friends and family members who are just stuck, with their eyes on that "prize" that has made the rest of their life pass by as unmemorable.

How?

Here's the first method through which you can experience a different bucket list item 365 days a year, and it will be what I'll focus on in this article.

Method 1: Start living the EMOTIONS from your bucket list, TODAY.

There's a famous Middle Eastern story that goes like this:

There once was a fisherman who started talking with his friend about his long-term dreams. He said "Ok, here's my plan. One day, I'm going to take these fish I have and convert my small fishing business into a huge import-export operation. I'm going to start a worldwide distribution company, supplying fish all over the world!!

I'm going to be famous and my business is going to get noticed by the press and media. I'm going to start making millions of dollars!!!

I'm then going to invest my millions of dollars in the markets and make even more money.

And then, with all of that money I've made, I'm going to retire."

At that point the friend turned and asked "And then what are you going to do?"

The fisherman turned to his friend and answered, "I'm going to fish all day and be a fisherman!"

After all the business pain, the turmoil, the ups and downs of running a global enterprise, all he wanted was to exude the same emotions he already had before even starting.

What is the point I'm making here? Am I saying you shouldn't start a business or go through the hustle and bustle of hard work? Absolutely NOT.

What I am saying is that many of the emotions and experiences you are waiting to have "some day" you can have TODAY even during your journey of living your life and working on your career. In fact, you can have them 365 days a year!

If your current career and life journey have come to mean you completely missing those experiences you aspire to til you sell your business or retire, then the journey will mean you have lived only 0.27% of your life (IF you live to be 100, that is).

Don't think about your Bucket List items or your Retirement dreams as stand-alone, one time, one day goals. Instead, think about what emotions you are looking to exude through those experiences. Most people want to save a nest egg in order to finally do and experience the things on their bucket or wish list, ignoring the fact that you don't need that nest egg to achieve those dreams.

Is your "wish list" to one day be able to retire by the sea and take a walk by the ocean every morning? If so, what is it that's keeping you from moving to a place where you can live by the beach? Is it as impossible as you think? If it is absolutely impossible, what is it about the beach and the ocean that is worth looking forward to? Does it feel like an escape? What is it that you're looking to escape? And why can't you escape that TODAY? How can you get out of the "trap" you are stuck in today (not when you're 70)?

If your "Retirement goal" is to play golf all day and then enjoy lunch with family, but you're living your job on the road all day and barely getting to see your family, don't you think something needs to change? Won't your children be in college by that time and you'll barely see them again? Was it worth saving to send them to college, but you couldn't see them growing up? So what if they go to a cheaper college, if they got to enjoy some time with you and had that bond created?

If on your bucket list is to jump off a cliff, what is the emotion you are looking to exude that is missing in your life daily such that you need such a "WAKE ME UP" experience? Is it the thrill that you are missing every single day of the year because you are stuck in a boring desk job? What can you do to start getting into a career trajectory where every day exudes emotions of jumping off a cliff, and there's massive adrenalin being pumped into your system through doing it?

Everything you want "some day" you can have today! But it will require you to first get granular on what emotion you are aspiring towards.
