Feeling Stuck in Your Career? Read This Before Calling a Recruiter

I’ve been in recruitment long enough to notice a pattern.

I receive countless calls from people saying: “I’m ready for something new. What can I do?”

Sometimes, there's a long list of previous roles... but not much clarity on what’s next.

And honestly? That’s a tough question to answer — especially on an unscheduled call.

❓Why It’s Not a Simple Answer

As a recruiter, I want to help. But without knowing you — your motivations, your likes and dislikes, your goals — I can only offer surface-level advice. And that’s not useful to either of us.

Before reaching out, it’s worth doing a little groundwork. That way, our conversation becomes far more focused and productive.

✅ Try This First – A Smarter Way to Plan Your Next Move

Here’s a simple, free and surprisingly powerful tip:

🔸 Go to ChatGPT (you can use the free version) 🔸 Upload your CVmake sure to remove personal info like name and contact details 🔸 Copy and paste this prompt:

“I’m at a crossroads in my career and want to explore a new path. From my CV, you can see the experience I have. I’ve enjoyed [insert what you’ve liked about previous roles], and my hobbies/interests include [insert here]. I’ve always dreamed of [insert aspiration]. Please suggest 5 career options I could explore based on my background. I am [open/not open] to going back to college or university, and I’d like to earn £[insert salary] annually.”

The result? You’ll get tailored suggestions based on your actual background, preferences, and goals — giving you clarity and helping any recruiter (including me) better understand how to help you.

💬 When You're Ready, Let’s Talk

Once you’ve done this exercise, feel free to reach out. You’ll have a clearer direction — and we can have a much more productive conversation about your next career move.

🔁 Share this with someone who’s unsure about their career path — it might be exactly what they need.
