Fiercely defending our members' needs

Fiercely defending our members' needs

Credit unions put consumers first – that’s your focus, day in and day out. This week saw several developments that could impact how you serve your members:

  • Court strikes down critical fraud-loss protections: Interchange fee income is critical to support a safe, affordable payments system. But a federal court struck down key fraud-loss protections in debit interchange fees, introducing serious risks for consumers and credit unions. We’re committed to defending your interests and fighting to preserve interchange income that supports secure, sustainable electronic payments. We’re putting a plan in place to specifically address this new development.
  • Protecting credit union needs under debanking EO: Credit unions have long reflected the mantra “once a member, always a member.” A new Executive Order aims to crack down on financial institutions that sever relationships with customers over political or ideological beliefs. Credit unions welcome people of all backgrounds, including those in unique economic sectors or with complex financial profiles, but it’s vital that credit unions have the ability to lawfully manage risk. As the NCUA works to implement the EO, rest assured that we will work to protect credit union interests with regulators, Congress, and the Administration to limit regulatory overreach that would hurt consumers’ access to credit unions.

Relentless advocacy to protect, empower, and advance credit unions:

  • Credit unions serve millions of military members, veterans and their families. We are standing firm against amendments affecting interchange, while backing much-needed CDFI investments, protecting credit union interests in the National Defense Authorization Act.
  • We saw credit union-supported legislation pass the Senate to curtail the abuse of mortgage trigger leads by limiting who can access this information. It now waits for the president’s signature.
  • Together with the Iowa and Connecticut leagues, we thanked Reps. Zach Nunn, R-Iowa, and Jim Himes, D-Ct. for introducing the House version of the TRAPS Act.
  • We shared credit union areas of concern when it comes to engaging with digital assets.
  • Congrats to Interra Credit Union CEO Amy Sink , who also serves on our board. She was named one of Indiana’s most influential and impactful business and community leaders through IBJ Media’s Indiana 250 Award. The list recognizes leaders across the state who are making an impact on the state’s economy and communities.
  • Don’t miss out on our 2025 Congressional Caucus in D.C., Sept. 7-9. Register today and help us keep up the momentum with in-person legislative meetings, interactions with colleagues, great speakers, and so much more.

Honoring our roots with a Labor of Love

Credit unions began with everyday people pooling resources when banks wouldn't help. Help celebrate our people, communities, and humble beginnings with a Day of Giving on August 27. This Labor of Love honors those hardworking families who served each other with dignity and fairness—values we continue today—while raising funds for America's Credit Union Museum.
