Fighting Inequality for a Resilient Future – Special edition for the 2023 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

Welcome to UNDRR’s new LinkedIn newsletter!

Today, 13 October, is the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

Inequality and disaster vulnerability are two sides of the same coin: the impacts of disasters exacerbate inequalities and push the most at risk further into poverty; while unequal access to services, such as finance and insurance, leaves the most at-risk even more exposed to the danger of disasters.

To mark the International Day, UNDRR offers a spread of new resources to further our fight against inequality, and shape a vision of a more resilient future.

We must break this cycle of inequality, disaster, repeat.” Mami Mizutori, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, in her IDDRR messages, said: “Inequality, in all its forms, is a major driver of disaster risk. That is because poverty and inequality create the conditions that force communities to live in hazardous areas, with weak infrastructure and housing. Inequality inhibits access to information, services and warnings.”
