2024 Grocery Pricing Summary

Pricing and promotions was front and center

While we have seen some cooling in inflation in 2024, there are some categories that have increased considerably, like eggs! How do we know this? Our Grocery Price Index. 

Datasembly’s data reports actual grocery price changes because we collect the full market - more than 12 Billion weekly observations. Other Indices use weighted values of a select basket of goods and household services, making GPI the only source of actual grocery price changes - as they happen!

Here’s a little more. With grocery prices increasing in 2024, some categories were very dramatic. Leading the surge was the eggs category, which skyrocketed by 63.6 pts – a sharp rebound after a significant drop of -67.2 pts earlier in 2023. Other categories also saw notable increases too. Beef rose 9.5 pts while Alternative Meat climbed 7.6 pts. Baking increased by 6.0 pts, and Candy & Gum saw a rise of 5.5 pts.

2024 Product Highlights

Expanded Collection

We’ve set out to collect every product, from every store and this year, we significantly expanded our coverage.  Here are a couple of key highlights.  

  • New Retailers: We added collections for a number of new banners, including Piggly Wiggly, Trader Joe's, Dierbergs, Rouses, Schnucks, Reasor’s, Big Y, Tractor Supply, and Stater Bros.

  • Digital Coupons: We also introduced a new digital coupon collection across key banners, including Albertsons Corp, Kroger Corp, Target, Meijer, HEB, Hy-Vee, Shoprite, and more.

Expanded use cases

Many of our customers start with Datasembly for price intelligence, but expand into the suites where we built new enhancements like promotional intelligence and product availability.

  • Introduced a new Landing Page: We released a streamlined app interface to help you navigate pricing, promotion, and product availability suites with ease.

  • We doubled down on Promotions: Beyond our new coupon collection, we introduced deeper insights into promotional strategies, such as BOGO vs. dollar-off, and expanded item-level coupon collection with net-down pricing calculations.
