From Advice to Action: Making the Most of Mentorship

Mentorship is more than just advice, it’s a dynamic relationship that can shape careers, open doors, and build confidence in ways that few other opportunities can. But the most impactful mentorship isn’t a one-sided exchange where guidance and wisdom flow in one direction; it’s a partnership. It works best when both people - mentor and mentee - are engaged, intentional, and ready to challenge themselves. In mentorship, the real power isn’t just in finding the right mentor. It’s in becoming the kind of mentee who turns conversations into opportunities, advice into action, and connection into long-term growth.

So how do you maximize your mentorship experience as a mentee? Here are some ways to get started:

1. Own Your Story

You don’t have to have everything figured out. You don’t need the perfect résumé or the perfect plan. But you do have to believe that your journey matters. When you show up to a mentorship conversation, don’t just focus on where you think you’re lacking or what you want to work on - share your passions, your ideas, and your ambitions. You bring value to the conversation, too.

2. Ask the Questions That Scare You

The best mentorship moments can come from the questions we’re afraid to ask. How do I negotiate my first salary? How do I deal with imposter syndrome? What if I don’t know what I want to do yet? Mentors don’t expect you to have it all figured out, they just want to help you find clarity and confidence.

3. Take the Leap

Mentorship isn’t just about advice; it’s about action. If a mentor encourages you to apply for a role, reach out to a new connection, or take on a challenge that stretches you—go for it. Growth happens when you step outside your comfort zone, and sometimes, a mentor’s belief in you can be the push you need.

4. Keep the Conversation Going

Mentorship isn’t a one-time event; it’s a relationship. You don’t need to have a formal meeting every week, but a simple update "Hey, I took your advice and here’s what happened"goes a long way. Mentors want to see you succeed, and keeping that connection alive means you’ll always have someone in your corner.

5. You Belong Here

Especially in industries like gaming and esports, where marginalized voices have had to fight for space, it’s easy to feel like mentorship is for other people. But you deserve guidance, support, and people who believe in you. Don’t wait for permission to seek mentorship. Reach out. Ask questions. Step forward. The right people will meet you there.

I am honored to have had some incredible mentors and mentees throughout my career, it's been one of the most fulfilling parts of my growth.

Mentorship has the power to change lives. Not because one person has all the answers, but because two people come together to build something - confidence, knowledge, opportunity. Your journey matters. Invest in it.
