Zaha Hadid Architects, known globally for their bold and fluid architectural forms, have developed and deployed an internal AI-driven design platform called ZHACODE. This generative design tool uses algorithms to explore thousands of design variations based on predefined criteria like site constraints, environmental data, programmatic needs, and material efficiencies. One of their standout applications was in the design of a mid-rise mixed-use development in East Asia, where ZHACODE analyzed plot geometry, daylight access, views, and wind dynamics to iteratively propose building massings. Instead of starting with static sketches, the team used AI to generate and evaluate over 10,000 design permutations, then selected a few with the most optimal solar performance and spatial usability.

By shifting the human architect’s role from designer to curator of AI-generated options, ZHA significantly reduced concept development time from weeks to hours, while also integrating sustainability analysis much earlier in the process.

This approach also fosters early-stage collaboration: the AI-generated models were easily shared with stakeholders (planners, engineers, clients) in real time for faster feedback and iteration.
