From Uncertainty to Opportunity: How One Coder Found His Place in AI
At DataAnnotation, flexibility and technical challenges go hand in hand. Whether you’re looking to sharpen your skills, work on cutting-edge AI, or just want a coding job that fits around your life, DA offers an environment where every contributor’s work truly matters. Here’s what one of our coders had to say about their experience.
I first discovered DataAnnotation when I was still in college around a year and a half ago. I was getting really interested in AI and trying to figure out how I fit into the world now that AI could do everything I could do. I mean literally everything. My professor had told me that AI was able to complete all the freshman and software course work with ease and it was discouraging. With entry level jobs getting harder and harder to find, I then found DataAnnotation.
Everyone I talked to including that professor said it was too good to be true and that it was too non-traditional, but soon I found myself on the platform shortly after completing the assessment (which was very easy and quick by the way). Which I must note, this was not those stupid assessments you take that are unrelated to your job, this is literally a preview of the work you will be doing. Nonetheless I was on the platform with introductory tasks that teach you how the platform works and then I was off!
Not exactly though, I was scared that maybe this would disappear one day and I would have nothing. What if I logged in one day expecting to make money to find that DataAnnotation had run out of projects! But after a week, then a month, then a year I was realizing more and more that DataAnnotation is not just a phase. It is the future. It is a new type of work that allows you to leave behind the drama and stress that comes with deadlines, presentations, and coworkers instead replacing it with the ability to drive to a local coffee shop to work, maybe sit on the couch with your computer on your lap and your pet right besides you, or maybe you are like me and it gave your the flexibility you needed to build a van and travel the country.
But ALL remote work allows you to work where you want, so what makes this any better. Well it comes down to the way the platform works. When you log on you will see a list of tasks available to you and you can read through them and decide what you feel like working on. Once you select a task you start a running clock on maybe your phone and work on the task. Once done you submit the task and record the time and that’s it! You’d think this would get boring but the platform has so many different projects there is always a new one to try to keep things interesting. But the best part about this is once you submit your time, and log out, you never have to think about your job until you log in again.
In all the other jobs I’ve had I always find myself thinking about it off the clock because work never seems to be able to stop itself from bleeding into our life at home, but in this case, there is nothing you need to stress about after you turn in the task. Your work there is done and the only time you need to think about it again is when you log on again to work.
I know there are quite a lot of people out there resisting AI because it is “going to take over the world” and “replace peoples jobs”. And hey, I get it. I went to school for four years and now I am actively training my replacement. But to a lot of those people I tell them, why not be a part of the change that you want to see. DataAnnotation specifically has projects aimed at making models safer and this is your opportunity to not only make money, but prevent the model from being a tool to inflict harm. This is your chance to make sure that terminator scenario doesn’t happen. So get at it! No matter who you are, DataAnnotation has an opportunity for you to get work and help make AI models better for everyone. It’s not about getting paid, it’s about creating a better and safer future for everyone.
