From Vision to Reality: The Rise of the Enterprise Agent Platform

From Vision to Reality: The Rise of the Enterprise Agent Platform

Back in December, I shared some reflections from Satya Nadella’s powerful video on the future of business applications. In that post, I highlighted one quote that continues to stay with me:

“We are moving from systems of record to systems of reasoning.”

Read the article here.

At the time, it felt like we were staring at a bold vision, a future where business applications move beyond CRUD logic and become intelligent orchestration platforms. A future where agents, not traditional apps, navigate across data sources, generate workflows, and take action.

Fast forward a few months, and we’re no longer just talking about it, we’re building it!

Together with Microsoft, we’re actively laying the foundation for what Satya described. This next-generation approach centers around an Enterprise Agent Platform that lives above the traditional application layer. It’s a significant shift, an architectural evolution that changes what enterprise software can do, and how value is delivered.

Here’s what this looks like in action:

  • Headless Business Services: At the foundation, we still have powerful systems like MS Dynamics 365, M365, and integrated third-party apps. These provide robust APIs, data models, and core business logic, but they’ll be no longer the central user interface.
  • Enterprise Agent Layer: Sitting on top is a dynamic, multi-agent orchestration layer. These AI agents are capable of interacting with multiple systems, reading from various data repositories, generating workflows, and even executing business logic autonomously. They don’t just automate, they reason, suggest, adapt, and act. (See webinar I mention below where we showcased one of our agents in this layer.)
  • Copilot Adaptive Experience: And at the top, a new UX model emerges, contextual, dynamic, and conversational. Instead of static menus and screens, users interact with copilots that dynamically present relevant interfaces based on the task, role, and context. It’s not about using an app anymore but it’s about solving a problem.

This isn’t a future vision. It’s here and we’re working with our customers right now to bring it to life.

Earlier this month, we shared more about this during our webinar on how AI agents are reshaping Microsoft Copilot for Microsoft Dynamics 365. We demonstrated what this shift means in practice and how organizations can start preparing for it today.

What’s been fascinating is seeing how quickly this ecosystem is coming together. When Satya first described this shift, many saw it as a longer-term vision. But innovation is accelerating, and thanks to our close collaboration with Microsoft, we’re already building agent-based solutions that drive real business outcomes. Thanks for the support Sameer Verma and team.

This week, I’m heading to Redmond to meet with Microsoft executives and product leaders to go deeper into this transformation. We’ll be discussing how we continue to shape the Enterprise Agent Platform, what capabilities are needed, how partners like us contribute to the ecosystem, and how we can help customers embrace this new reality faster.

This is no longer about what’s coming, it’s about what’s already possible.

We’re entering an era where enterprise systems will no longer be defined by their screens or modules, but by their intelligence and ability to act on behalf of users. It’s exciting. It’s transformative. And it’s happening now.

Safe travels with the team, Luciano. I just returned from Redmond. Your post is insightful, and this is the direction for future business applications. I think with the current technology, the customer adoption of generative AI using Agents will get a boost.
