GitLab + Google Cloud = AI-Assisted Capabilities for Developers
Today, Google and GitLab announced a major expansion of our partnership. GitLab will leverage Google’s infrastructure and Vertex AI/LLM to accelerate building new AI-assisted capabilities so developers can build safer and more reliable software faster.
AI is a hot topic these days with many people enjoying Turing-like interactions with ChatGPT and Google’s own Bard. But these rudimentary interfaces are just a preview of what's to come, the early days of AI which Sachin Dev Duggal referred to being like the “old AOL dial-up days of the internet”. Indeed, AI without context is mundane, nothing more than a toy easily forgotten in six months. The true value for businesses will come when generative AI is applied to solve business problems and provide helpful new features within the tools we already use. The impact of AI can be life changing:
- In medicine, identify potential drug interactions early
- In insurance, resolve payment claims faster and more reliably
- In air travel, help customers get to their destination more reliably with rebooking assistance
- In automotive, better diagnostic tools and assessments
You get the idea.
And in the world of software development with the DevSecOps tools that make the magic, where developers are responsible for building future consumer and enterprise applications, generative AI can enable some amazing new things, like:
- code suggest to help developers turn ideas to code
- code complete to help developers write software faster
- reviewer suggest to reduce the time it takes to peer review changes
- explain this vulnerability to help developers understand vulnerabilities in their code by describing the issue in plain language
- code summarize to annotate and build docs so developers can spend more time writing code, and less time doing everything else
All of these AI-assisted capabilities will help developers build better, safer software faster.
And our partnership with Google will go even further - as users adopt GitLab AI to accelerate their development velocity, in time they will also begin building and implementing AI-enabled solutions into their own software - a seed that grows into a tree which grows into a forrest.
To learn more about GitLab’s AI plans, I invite you to join us on Wednesday to hear GitLab Co-Founder and CEO Sid Sibrandij discuss GitLab’s strategy regarding AI, its role in solving customer pain points, and the company’s product roadmap. Learn more here and register for the webinar here. If you missed the fireside chat, here is a copy of the recording on youtube, and summary of the content Sid covered in his blog post on AI assisted features here.
Finally, I want to thank our amazing partners at Google without whom this would all be much harder to do: Thomas, June, Kevin, Gabe, Michael, Adaire, Richard, Mark and many more!
Interesting times ahead.. Looking forward for AI race in area of #devsecops and #platformengineering
