Gratitude in Challenging Times
For years, writing in my gratitude journal has been a daily ritual. Lately, however, the practice has been more difficult to maintain. Reflecting on why, a line stands out from a New York Times article last week on practicing gratitude in a difficult season:
“Articulating what we’re thankful for is a radical act in the midst of a hard time.”
Wow does that hit home. Like many people this year, I lost someone I loved who was very close to me. If you haven’t been in that situation, you certainly know someone who has. Combine that with the grayer days and relentless uncertainty around when life will get back to normal, and it’s tougher to see all the good that exists around us.
But we must. I had a conversation with a friend the other day that I know I need to get back in the habit of writing in my gratitude journal. For perspective. So that I stay centered. And so that I can give thanks for the everyday things that make life joyful – and there are many.
We’re living in a time when a lot of us have lost control of a lot of things, or perhaps more pointedly, the feeling that we’re in control. But the one thing we can control is our ability to be grateful. It’s within our power. So, in that spirit, I thought I’d get back in the gratitude mindset by sharing a few things I’ve been grateful for this year.
The McCann Partners Team and Our Clients
The McCann Partners team has been a consistent bright spot on many levels. We were able to add a fantastic new team member during this time, something I am immensely grateful for, as there are many organizations that have not had the opportunity as of late.
Being in recruitment, we’ve always felt lucky to do what we do: put people to work. I’ve never felt more appreciated for doing exactly that than I have over the past few months. The candidates we’ve placed and their responses back to us have been filled with thanks and grace. Without our amazing client partnerships, this would not have been possible.
Our Community
Whether it’s been powerful “Learning as We Climb” roundtable discussions hosted by our team, ARA’s Allyship, Advocacy and Taking Action virtual series, happy hour beer tastings and more, the support from the McCann Partners community has been nothing short of tremendous. We all know this is a tough time for so many of us, and to see the pivots our community made to come together has been a shining light.
This time also has been a strong reminder of how valuable our partners are to our success and wellbeing, including ClearEdge Marketing, Accelerated Growth and several others.
My Family and Friends
Last, but most definitely not least, my family and friends have been a rock for me during the past several months. There are too many moments to count, but I am grateful for each and every one and only hope that I can return the support they’ve given me.
As we approach a very different, and sometimes difficult, holiday season, I plan to get back in the practice of writing in my gratitude journal each morning and evening. I’d love to hear from you! What are you grateful for this holiday season? Please share below and let our collective appreciation for things big and small be a blessing.

4yI am grateful for your friendship, Megan, and for the many "regular" contacts I've had with friends and associates through this challenging year. The Allyship in Action series has been a bright spot as well. I paid close attention to the seasons and nature this year, and it provided comfort that all things do actually unfold with ease and are beautiful in all stages...beginnings, growth, decline, withering, death and dormancy. The wheel keeps turning and if we are calm, steady and patient, we realize we are connected to that cycle and all beings.

4yAs your friend, ARA co-founder and marketing partner, I can say without a doubt you have always been and continue to be a blessing and inspiration to me and those you surround. You gifted me the gratitude journal and your post has inspired me to dive right into it. As the days fly by, it’s incredibly important to reflect and even read back on those days. The journal and its intentions is a gift I’m going to continue paying forward, too. 🙏

4yI am so sorry for your loss Megan. Glad you’re finding the way back to gratitude journaling. My 10 minutes of reflection and gratitude in the morning is what grounds me everyday. I am every second grateful for my son, my family, my health, their health, my friends, my coworkers, my job, my home, the opportunity to follow my passion. And I’m especially grateful for the people who cross my path and unknowingly change my life or allow me to change theirs. Have a wonderful thanksgiving!
