Having a Daily Equity Practice

Having a Daily Equity Practice

On last Friday’s Lady Boss call, we talked about what it means to have a daily equity practice. It is a new concept for me. But it’s what will help me move from saying I am an anti-racist/white ally, to being one. Which happens with action.

As I reflected on Carole Burton’s definition of Equity, the word that shot into my mind was SCARCITY. That’s the rub, right? If everyone is equal and opportunities are distributed equally and systems are created equally, then there’s less for me.

Scarcity mindset is a tremendous topic to unpack. Scarcity is defined as “insufficiency or shortness of supply”. And mindset is defined as “a fixed attitude, disposition or mood”. So together it looks like an attitude of insufficiency. Not enoughness. A mindset that produces fear, unworthiness, blame, apathy, the list goes on.

One of the most important steps for me in building my daily equity practice is looking at my scarcity mindset. And then I can keep adding to the practice.

If you are feeling lost as to how to BE an anti-racist/white ally, there are many ways to begin this work. It’s personal. You could start by asking yourself, how do I react to the definition of equity?

Do I feel guilty?

Do I feel inspired?

Do I feel confused?

Do I feel energized?

What is the benefit of having one?

Just start there. I guarantee, if you’re honest with yourself, some stuff is going to come up.

Take it one step at a time. But take a step.

You are an amazing writer, Sarah McNally . What a poignant message. Once I got to understand that I didn't understand (as in being in short supply of fully appreciating what it was to walk in another's shoes), I was on my way to fully appreciating what anti-racism means. It is a mindset that has nothing to do with not being kind, just scarce. Thank you for having the courage to chsmpion this.
