We’re excited to announce that the Japanese version of “Principles and Best Practices for Book and Claim in Heavy Transport” is now available. Originally published in 2024 by the Book and Claim Community — a community that is led by RMI and Smart Freight Centre as the joint Secretariat that brings together diverse stakeholders to co-develop a unified book and claim chain of custody framework for transport decarbonization — this document outlines key principles and best practices for credible book and claim systems in heavy transport. The Japanese version has been translated and published under the responsibility of MOL, a member of the Book and Claim Community’s Governing Board.🚢 For Japanese companies exploring book and claim systems to support transportation decarbonization — including through initiatives like MOL’s BLUE ACTION NET-ZERO ALLIANCE — this resource offers valuable guidance.

Supporting Indirect Mitigation in Maritime Sector's Net-Zero Transition !

We signed on to an open letter organized by Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA) and Katalist as part of a joint response to the Science Based Targets initiative’s public comment period for its draft Corporate Net Zero Standard 2.0 (CNZS 2.0). Alongside other first mover organizations across the maritime sector, the open letter focuses on the topic of indirect mitigation. Indirect mitigation efforts, like book and claim systems, have the potential to unlock value chain emissions abatement and investment, helping scale critical technologies faster than direct supplier engagement in many harder-to-abate sectors like maritime. MOL is dedicated to the maritime sector’s clean energy transition, and launched its branded carbon insetting program "BLUE ACTION NET-ZERO ALLIANCE" in last February. MOL is supportive of SBTi’s inclusion of indirect mitigation efforts in this draft. With proper support on guidance from organizations like SBTi, we can expand the use of this powerful emissions abatement tool toward the mutual goal of facilitating credible corporate emissions abatement in line with a net-zero goal.

Attending Bioinnovasia 2025

We participated in Bioinnovasia 2025 in Tokyo on May 21st, where MOL members Dai Miyata attended the panel discussions "Strategies for Aviation, Maritime & Other “Hard to Abate” Sectors to Achieve Emission Reduction Goals."

This session highlighted how Japan's leading transportation companies—DHL Japan, JAL, and MOL—are working towards their emission reduction goals, including using the "Book and Claim" system. Miyata emphasized the importance of voluntary initiatives in the transportation sector to exceed current regulatory requirements, noting the lack of global regulations in the shipping industry that incentivize fuel switching. MOL launched its carbon insetting program, the "BLUE ACTION NET-ZERO ALLIANCE," in February 2025, applying the "Book and Claim" mechanism and addressing associated risks. The event allowed MOL to showcase its initiatives, engage in collaborative discussions with other transportation leaders, and emphasize its proactive efforts to expand biofuel use, taking action independently of regulatory changes.

Attending Smart Freight Week 2025 in Amsterdam!

We had an opportunity to participate in Smart Freight Week 2025 in Amsterdam held during the week of March 17th.

At the 123Carbon Warm-up Event, Dai Miyata presented an overview of our company and introduced our carbon inset program, 'BLUE ACTION NET-ZERO ALLIANCE.'

Throughout Smart Freight Week, our team joined insightful sessions on Market-Based Measures (MBM) and Book & Claim, which are particularly relevant to carbon insetting. These sessions provided valuable insights into the fundamental principles, the history and future direction of relevant frameworks and standards, as well as the latest updates on how various companies are approaching implementation and considering alignment with initiatives. Overall, it was a highly informative and meaningful experience.

This event provided a valuable opportunity to reconnect with our partners and expand our network by building new relationships with like-minded partners and stakeholders who share the same ambition toward decarbonization.

We would like to thank Smart Freight Centre and all participants for the meaningful discussions.

Launch of the new carbon insetting program ”BLUE ACTION NET-ZERO ALLIANCE"!

On Feb 2025, we launched a new carbon insetting program named 'BLUE ACTION NET-ZERO ALLIANCE.' This is a program offered across the MOL Group, and MOL contribute to the reduction of Scope 3 emissions for shippers and NVOCCs utilizing marine transportation by collaborating with stakeholders (='Alliance') involved in marine transportation to create and enhance low-emission marine transportation services using alternative fuels.
